Disney Repeats An Unfortunate Oscars Losing Streak For The First Time In 18 Years

The award for Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Oscars went to The Boy and the Heron, meaning that Disney continues a disheartening losing streak at the prestigious awards show. As many know, Disney has dominated the world of animation for decades, so the production studio has won numerous Oscars over the years. However, as Disney continues to decline in the 2020s (due to various factors), other animation companies are rising to the top and claiming the esteemed trophy during recent Academy Awards ceremonies.

The Boy and the Heron was produced by Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animated studio based in Tokyo, and was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The 2023 fantasy film received a lot of attention during the 2024 awards season, so it’s not surprising that it took home Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.

Pixar’s Elemental was one of the five movies nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, and, as mentioned above, it lost to The Boy and the Heron. Meanwhile, Pixar’s Turning Red received a nod in the category at the previous Oscars in 2023, but the film lost to Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
