Disney Just Proved Frozen’s Live-Action Remake Isn’t As Far Away As Expected

Disney Just Proved Frozen’s Live-Action Remake Isn’t As Far Away As Expected

With Disney’s live-action remakes becoming increasingly common, the studio just proved that a live-action Frozen movie may be closer than anticipated. The Frozen franchise has broken many box office records, including Frozen 2 becoming the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. It is easily one of Disney’s biggest animated IPs in years, making it a strong candidate to be adapted into a live-action format. While there haven’t been many recent updates about the potential live-action Frozen movie, it seems inevitable that it will happen eventually, and one announcement from Disney means it could happen even sooner than expected.

Disney’s live-action remakes have had mixed success over the years. While The Lion King and Alladin‘s remakes found massive box office success, the likes of Dumbo and The Little Mermaid didn’t hit financial expectations. This proves that even though Disney has made the format work on some occasions, live-action remakes don’t guarantee success. Despite this, Disney doesn’t appear to be changing their strategy. Frozen‘s live-action adaptation isn’t confirmed, but Disney has officially given one other project the greenlight, which not only makes a Frozen remake far more likely, but it proves it could happen soon.

The recent plans involving Moana are proof that Frozen 3 won’t prevent Disney from making a live-action Frozen remake. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirmed a live-action Moana movie, which made it all the more surprising that Moana 2 was also confirmed and given a release date. The live-action Moana film was officially announced in April 2023 and was initially targeted for a 2025 release, but there has been no official release date for the project. On the other hand, Moana 2 was only announced in February 2024, yet will come out on December 29, 2024.

Moana having a sequel and live-action movie in the works at once means Frozen could do the same. Frozen 3 is set to hit theaters in 2026 but could still have a remake shortly after. Moana‘s sequel and a live-action remake may be released within a year of each other, suggesting there is potential for Frozen to adopt this same strategy. Traditionally, Disney’s live-action remakes come after the animated franchise is finished, which implied Frozen wouldn’t get this kind of adaptation for years. However, Moana has proven this isn’t the case and gives Frozen‘s live-action project a huge boost.

Frozen 2 leaves its ending wide open for more Anna and Elsa adventures. Here’s what we know so far about Frozen 3’s possible release date and story.

When Disney’s Live-Action Frozen Remake Could Come Out

Frozen‘s live-action remake is likely to release sometime after Frozen 3. Considering the live-action movie hasn’t been confirmed, it will probably take a few years for the project to be fully developed. With no cast or director, the chances of it being released before 2026 seem far-fetched. Frozen‘s live-action adaptation seems most likely to happen in 2027 or 2028, depending on what happens with Frozen 4. If the studio is making a fourth film, it doesn’t mean a live-action depiction can’t happen, but Frozen 4‘s story choices and new characters could impact casting decisions, which may delay the live-action project.

Frozen 3 exceeding the previous entry’s box office or even coming close to matching will presumably make Disney cash in on the franchise with another sequel and a live-action project, both of which may already be in the works by the time the third installment arrives. Until the project is officially announced, gauging a release date will be difficult. However, if the live-action Moana adaptation is successful, it may push Disney into producing a Frozen remake soon after, with its arrival presumably coming a year or two after Frozen 3.
