Disney Hits Second-Straight Thanksgiving Weekend Disappointment As Wish Box Office Underwhelms

Wish has given Disney its second disappointing Thanksgiving in a row. The new animated movie, which acts as an origin story for the company’s iconic wishing star, is the only animated movie being released by Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2023 as it celebrates its centennial. However, 2023 has seen a surprising string of failures for the company so far, including Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny losing roughly $100 million, The Haunted Mansion failing to recoup its $150 million budget, and The Marvels grossing the lowest opening weekend of the entire cinematic universe.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Wish box office is continuing this dismal 2023 trend for Disney. It is currently projected to earn a 5-day total between $32 and $33 million. It is still too soon to tell if it will take No. 2 for the weekend over Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, but this gross regardless comes in severely below the original $45-$50 million projections. It also gives Disney its second disappointing Thanksgiving in a row after Strange World flopped in theaters in 2022.
