Disney Hints Which 2025 Marvel Movies Are Most Important

Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed huge changes coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could impact the shape of the franchise’s upcoming release schedule. After Marvel Studios began to develop its own TV shows for Disney+, the sheer volume of content being delivered by the production behemoth increased massively. In 2021 alone, Marvel Studios released four feature films and premiered five TV series. This huge change not only led to the emergence of so-called “superhero fatigue”, but also stretched Marvel Studios’ workers too thin, which has had a detrimental impact on the quality and performance of several MCU projects.

Speaking at Disney’s latest earnings call, The Walt Disney Company’s CEO Bob Iger revealed that Marvel Studios would be slowing down output and putting more focus on the MCU’s heavy-hitters and popular franchises. Interestingly, Iger only mentioned Captain America: Brave New World and Fantastic Four as Marvel Studios’ 2025 releases (via X), while Thunderbolts and Blade are also expected to release in 2025. This perhaps hints at the Captain America and Fantastic Four franchises being viewed as key properties for the MCU’s future, while other characters and stories are suggested to be less important to the development of the franchise.

Disney Just Accidentally Made Thunderbolts Concerns More Real

MCU Thunderbolts line-up reveal

Since Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed the development of a Thunderbolts project for the MCU back in 2022, and revealed the line-up that September, there have been concerns that the project is simply unnecessary. Thunderbolts seems to have been produced as a replacement for an Avengers-level movie for the MCU’s Phase 5, though there is confusion about why the Avengers themselves couldn’t join forces before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. With Bob Iger’s recent comments, it seems even Disney doesn’t have faith in Thunderbolts performing well, suggesting this might be the only adventure the team embarks on.

While Thunderbolts may not be a tragic loss in some viewers’ eyes, Bob Iger also neglected to mention Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, which is currently expected to release on November 7, 2025. A Blade reboot has been in the works for many years, but really began to pick up steam after Mahershala Ali’s casting in the titular role in 2019. Unfortunately, Blade has had a tumultuous production period, being the victim of major delays, departing directors and writers, and multiple swathing script rewrites. Following Iger’s comments, there may be some major casualties in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
