Disney+ Has Two Unannounced Marvel Shows In Development, Confirms CEO

Two more Marvel shows are in the works for Disney+, adding to a growing slate of content. It’s been a few months since Disney launched its streaming service with exclusive programming like The Mandalorian and the live-action/CGI-hybrid Lady and the Tramp remake, but they’ve yet to have any major Marvel Cinematic Universe content so far. Fans were treated to an Expanding the Universe featurette that provided some concept art of the upcoming slate of shows and Marvel Hero Project, but that is it.

The MCU will first bring content to Disney+ with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which now has been confirmed for an August release and will follow that up with the launch of WandaVision in December. But Marvel Studios is developing multiple other shows for the service. They’ve got Tom Hiddleston set to headline a Loki series, the fan-favorite comic character Kamala Khan announced to lead Ms. Marvel, and an animated What If?… series in the works.

Those are just a few of the shows they’re developing, with HawkeyeShe-Hulk, and Moon Knight also announced, but that isn’t all. During Walt Disney Studios’ earnings call, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that more are on the way. After discussing the Disney+ Super Bowl spot highlighting Falcon & Winter SoldierWandaVision, and Loki, he said, “There are seven other Marvel series in various stages of development or pre-production.” All in all, Marvel Studios has announced five other shows not featured in the spot, so Iger just revealed that two more are in development.

At this moment, it is not clear what projects Iger is referring to. It’s possible that one of them is Marvel 616, a documentary show that will focus on how the stories, characters, and creators of Marvel Comics and their historical, cultural, and societal context. Since this has yet to be released, Marvel 616 could be one of the other projects that Iger was referring to. Either way, Iger’s quote still confirms that there are other shows in the works from Marvel Studios that have yet to be announced and comes on the heels of rumors that two more shows were in development, one possibly being a Secret Invasion series.

Disney+ may be without original MCU content so far, but it is clear that this will not be an issue for them in the years to come. Marvel Studios is nearing the end of production on their two 2020 releases and just began on Loki. Meanwhile, they’re busy trying to find the right fits for Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, Marc Spector, and Jennifer Walters to move the other four live-action shows forward. As much content as this is, these shows may only get Marvel Studios through the early parts of 2022, so they’re going to need more soon anyway. Whether it is Secret Invasion or shows starring the Thunderbolts, Young Avengers, Ironheart, or any of the other rumored possibilities, expect many more Disney+ announcements from Marvel Studios in the months and years to come.
