Disney has canceled the red carpet portion of the European premiere of Mulan amid the growing coronavirus outbreak. The spread of coronavirus around the world has led to a great deal of change within the entertainment industry. Numerous events, including SXSW, have been canceled, while studios debate postponing their upcoming big releases. MGM and Universal announced Daniel Craig’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die, would be moving from April to November as a result of the outbreak.
Per THR, Disney has opted to scale back on Mulan‘s European premiere, which is set for Thursday evening in London. While the screening will continue as planned, the red carpet portion has been canceled. In an official statement, Disney said, “In an abundance of caution we are downscaling this evening’s premiere of Mulan and will no longer have a media line or red carpet, we will however continue to host the premiere screening as a contained inside screening event.”
While Mulan will miss out on its China release (at least for the time being) due to the outbreak, recent box office predictions suggest it could still have a successful opening in the United States. As the first PG-13 live action remake to be released by Disney, there’s a lot riding on Mulan‘s release. Early critical reactions of the film, however, suggest Disney might have another hit on their hands, provided it performs well at the box office.
