Luci and Elfo play pivotal roles in the life of Dreamland’s own Princess Tiabeanie. They are the literal incarnation of the devil and the angel upon her shoulders; Luci is a demon sent from Hell and Elfo is a sweet-natured elf from the innocent land of Elfwood.
Luci: Sacrificing His Immortality
After Elfo’s tragic death at the end of Part I, Dreamland’s golden trio was left without a member. In Part II’s “Stairway to Hell,” Luci takes Bean to Hell to meet with Elfo to bring their friend back from the dead.
Luci initially appears to have betrayed Bean and Elfo – twice – before he gives up his immortality to rescue his friends and return to Dreamland. Despite all his talk of evil, this demon has a good heart.
Elfo: Saving Bean From Marrying Merkimer
At the beginning of Disenchantment, Bean is begrudgingly preparing to marry Prince Guysbert before his untimely death at the altar. Her relief is short-lived when King Zog instead arranges for his daughter to marry Merkimer, the prince’s brother.
Elfo knows how much Bean does not want to marry Merkimer, so when the opportunity arises he tricks the arrogant prince. Elfo manipulates Merkimer into consuming a potion containing elf’s blood that turns him into a pig, freeing Bean from her unhappy future.
Luci: Helping Bean Write Her Story
Luci may have taken his role as a “writer’s demon” seriously but he was still a big help to Bean when the princess was struggling to express herself. Searching for meaning in her life, Bean’s new friends from Dreamland’s coffee shop encourage her to write her story as a way to cope with her pain.
Luci encourages Bean throughout the process of writing her play, whereas Elfo is dismissive. It is possible that Elfo still resents Bean for choosing to revive her mother Dagmar instead of him, and their friendship is irrevocably damaged.
Elfo: Donating His Blood
During Part I of Disenchantment, King Zog made it clear that Elfo could only stay in the kingdom if his blood could be used with the Eternity Pendant to create the Elixir of Life. Despite the regular blood draining, Elfo endures this so he can be close to Bean.
In “To Thine Own Elf Be True,” the trio return from their adventure to the Lost City of Cremorrah and use Elfo’s blood to attempt to revive some of the people. Though this doesn’t work due to Elfo’s mysterious heritage, his effort and bravery are commendable.
Luci: Because The Trio Isn’t The Same Without Him
The inhabitants of Dreamland accept Luci as Bean’s weird talking cat, oblivious to his true identity as the princess’ personal demon, sent to her by the Enchantress and Cloyd. This nearly leads to Luci’s death after he is exorcised by Big Jo in “The Princess of Darkness.”
Despite Bean feeling more peaceful without Luci, both her and Elfo agree that the demon is a vital member of the group and set off to rescue him. The trio has more in common than they originally thought, all of them lost souls that have found each other.
Elfo: Taking Bean & Luci To Elfwood
Elfo did not leave Elfwood on good terms. After disturbing the peace one too many times, the elf was sentenced to death before his subsequent escape to Dreamland. Despite outsiders being banned from Elfwood, Elfo takes his friends there seeking shelter after he is expelled from the kingdom by Zog.
This shows Elfo sticking with his friends through thick and thin. The trio has had many mishaps and adventures together and has grown inseparable as a result.
Luci: He’s Never Tried To Kiss Her
Bean and Luci have a strong bond that is purely platonic. The demon has never used his position to try and seduce Bean in any way, unlike Elfo who tried to kiss her in “Love’s Tender Rampage.”
Embarrassed by Bean’s rejection, Elfo immediately concocts a lie that has disastrous consequences. Believing Elfo’s girlfriend to be real, Bean captures Tess the Giantess to reunite the ‘lovers.’
Elfo: The Trio Wasn’t The Same Without Him Either
When Elfo was tragically shot by an arrow in “To Thine Own Elf Be True,” it looked as though the trio would never be the same. With the resurrection of mysterious Queen Dagmar, there were plenty of distractions in the narrative, but ultimately Bean and Luci felt the absence of Elfo too strongly and ventured to Hell to reunite with him.
This proves how each member of the trio is equally as important. Just as Bean and Elfo felt Luci’s disappearance strongly in Part I, Bean and Luci also could not be without Elfo even in death.
Luci: Helping Bean Escape From Dagmar
Bean finds herself in danger during Part II’s opening episode “The Disenchantress.” Trapped in Maru by Dagmar and her evil family, Bean rescues Luci and the pair embrace before attempting to flee from Bean’s relatives.
Dagmar almost catches up to bean, who finds herself unable to harm her mother. Luci makes that decision for her, however, pushing Bean with the door and forcing her to drop a candle and ignite the cellar.
Elfo: Leaving Heaven For Bean
In “Stairway to Hell,” Elfo is revealed to be residing in Heaven following his death in Part I. After intercepting a message from Bean telling him to meet her in Hell, Elfo does not hesitate to follow his friend’s orders to see her again.
Elfo makes many failed attempts to anger God and provoke his rejection from Heaven, but ultimately it is him nonchalantly insulting Jerry that causes his damnation. The trio is reunited in Hell at long last before they finally return to Dreamland.
