Discord’s Linked Roles Uses Your Other Accounts To Verify Your Identity

Discord‘s new ‘Linked Roles’ feature is an extension of Connections, and will allow users to verify their identity by linking accounts from select third-party platforms. Discord has offered the ability to connect third-party accounts for a while. Users have had the ability to link accounts from platforms like Spotify, Xbox, Twitch, Steam, YouTube, and more to their Discord profile.

These account integrations offer additional features for Discord users. For example, connecting a Spotify account to a Discord profile allows users to share the songs they’re currently listening to and invite friends to listen along. Xbox integration, on the other hand, lets users display their Xbox gamer tag and game activity on their Discord profile. There’s also the option to connect Discord voice chat with Xbox.

With Linked Profiles, Discord is now expanding on its Connections feature. Users will be able to verify the authenticity of their Discord account by displaying their Connections in different servers. At the moment, Discord has 21 official Connections that support the Linked Profiles feature, including Spotify, Xbox, Facebook, eBay, PayPal, Crunchyroll, Epic Games Store, Twitter, Reddit, Steam, Jefit, DeviantArt, Bloxlink, TikTok, PlayStation, Battle.net, Github, League of Legends, Riot Games, Twitch, and YouTube.

Adding a Connection to a Discord account displays relevant information on a user’s profile, but now, certain Connections will display more details and stats to add another level of authenticity. For example, a connected Twitter account will display when a user joined the platform, and how many followers and tweets they have. A Reddit account, on the other hand, will display a user’s Karma points.

Discord says Linked Profiles will let users confirm that the person they’re chatting with is legit. Users who want to buy art from a DeviantArt artist will now be able to see how many art prints they have for sale, how many followers they have, and what their feedback score is. Similarly, users can see a person’s eBay rating to make sure they’re a legitimate seller and not a scam artist. Once users add a Connection to their Discord profile, they’ll be able to see which servers they can obtain a Linked Role for in the server settings drop down menu.

In servers that offer Linked Roles, users can choose the roles they want to access to view the linking requirements. The perks for each Linked Role depends on what the admins for that server decide. Satisfying those requirements will allow users to gain access to special channels or spaces in servers. For example, admins can decide that a person should have a Steam account that’s at least 10 days old and have a certain number of Dota 2 items to be eligible for a Steam Gamer role. Users who satisfy those requirements will automatically be granted a Linked Role, without any involvement from the server admins.

Apart from Linked Roles, Discord is also rolling out green checkmarks next to verified apps, which will let users know that the app is from a trusted developer, adding another layer of authenticity to Connections. There are 22 official apps available on Discord at the moment, with more coming in 2023.
