Captain America: Civil War stars Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo and the original Agent Carter herself, Hayley Atwell, attended Wizard World Comic-Con New Orleans over the weekend. During the event, Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo spoke during a Q&A where they tease a bit of information about the next Marvel project(s) they’re working on: the two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
It began when Anthony accidentally referred to Hayley Atwell’s character as Sharon Carter (who’s actually played by Emily VanCamp) instead of Peggy Carter, to which his brother and co-director Joe corrected the slip and offered an interesting explanation as to why it’s easy to mix character names.
“We have so many characters we’re dealing with. We’re breaking ground on Avengers: Infinity War. We have a board with 67 characters on it. You have to forgive him.”
At this point we can’t tell if the number is a joke, emphasizing the sheer scale and scope of Infinity War – the culmination of Phases 1-3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – or if that’s actually the case and that many ‘main’ characters are set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War. If it is true and the final outcome is that many characters appearing, there shouldn’t really be any surprise at the number.
Just running through who we can assume will be in the film we have one Avengers roster (potentially two depending on the fallout of Captain America: Civil War), the (likely larger) Guardians of the Galaxy team, Thor and his Asgardian pals (potentially Sif, Warriors Three, Valkyrie, etc.), plus the new characters of Phase 3 (Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Wasp, Captain Marvel). There’s always the chance, despite the track record so far of Marvel Studios not including anyone from Marvel TV that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (which includes the Secret Warriors), the Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage) are joining the fray alongside their supporting characters (Punisher, Elektra) too.
Don’t count on Marvel TV characters getting a significant role though if that were to happen, for those additions would push the number of characters far beyond 67. Despite Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige teasing that it’s “inevitable” that the movies will fold in TV characters eventually, the Russos have somewhat dismissed the possibility by labeling the idea of Netflix’s heroes being in Infinity War as “complicated.”
There’s also the supporting staff including government reps and S.H.I.E.L.D. prime (Nick Fury and Maria Hill) and of course the villains who will be led by Thanos (Josh Brolin). If Avengers: Infinity War delves into the history and power of the Infinity Stones, we might be meeting quite a few cosmic characters (i.e. Death) from Marvel Comics and perhaps a roster of new and returning villains for Marvel’s heroes to battle against.
