Director Of A 1988 Cult Classic Horror Movie Has An Idea For An Unconventional Continuation

The 1988 cult classic horror movie Killer Klowns From Outer Space gets an exciting sequel update. A sci-fi horror comedy written, directed, and produced by the Chiodo Brothers, with Charles Chiodo and Edward Chiodo producing, Killer Klowns features a group of evil aliens that resemble clowns. These evil aliens arrive on Earth, invading a small town to kill and harvest humans and drink their blood. The cast included Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, and John Vernon.

In an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar+), director Stephen Chiodo gave a detailed update on the future of Killer Klowns From Outer Space. The filmmaker mentioned that there was a “great concept that continues the story.” In the quote below, the director shares specific story ideas and mentions his hope of doing a Killer Klowns From Outer Space miniseries for a streaming service:

My goal is to do an eight-part miniseries for streamers. We’ve got a great concept that continues the story of our main characters. We’ll follow a new group of teenagers who come upon the clowns and meet a drunk living in his van – it’s Mike Tobacco. There’s a big invasion and we end up on the clown planet. We have lots of great ideas about where this universe goes. You haven’t even seen the clown animals on the clown planet yet. There’s a whole world of things that we have in mind!

Killer Klowns From Outer Space Has Had A Long Road To Continuation

Potential sequels have been stuck in limbo since the movie’s release, though Chiodo has maintained his desire to continue the story in some way. The Chiodo brothers had planned to release a sequel, titled Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 3D. Cramer would reprise his role as Mike Tobacco. The character would now be regarded as the town drunk, and his ramblings about the evil extraterrestrials who look like clowns would be dismissed. But when the klowns do come back, he’s prepared to fight them with the help of two young street performers.

But as indicated by Stephen Chiodo’s recent comments, plans for Killer Klowns From Outer Space have shifted away from a trilogy to focus on television. It was noted that the new plans could be a long-ranging show. Since then, in October 2018, there were reports that the Syfy channel was in talks to license the rights to at least one sequel.

Why Shorty Is The Creepiest Of The Killer Klowns From Outer Space

All the titular aliens from 1988’s Klowns From Outer Space are intensely creepy, but here’s why Shorty might just be the creepiest of all.

Based on the latest update, the focus is now for Killer Klowns from Outer Space to move into the television space. It could be a good fit for Shudder, if deals could be worked out, or even Syfy. There’s an idea in place, at the very least, that could appeal to the many who have elevated the movie to cult status over the decades.
