Did Netflix Just Spoil Millie Bobby Brown’s Damsel Movie?

Millie Bobby Brown’s upcoming Netflix movie, Damsel, certainly looks exciting, but the trailer might have revealed a little too much about the ending. Brown’s character, Princess Elodie, is handed over to another kingdom to marry a prince, but nothing is as it seems. Damsel is framed like a classic fantasy fairy tale with a twist, which should mean an exciting end full of surprises. Unfortuantely, the action-packed trailer seems to have added far too many hints about the Netflix movie’s resolution, which is an ongoing and frustrating trend.

The trailer for Damsel, which will be released on Netflix on March 8th, 2024, sees Brown’s character turned into a classic damsel in distress when her new in-laws toss her into a dragon pit as a ritual sacrifice. However, Princess Elodie is far from a helpless maiden. Throughout the many scenes included in the three-minute teaser, she is clearly determined not only to survive but also to seek revenge on Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright), Elodie’s evil mother-in-law. It’s precisely the kind of dark fantasy that is bound to do well, but the significant spoilers in the trailer could be a problem.

Damsel Trailer Seems To Spoil Millie Bobby Brown’s Character Fate

Browns Princess Elodie being forced to somehow survive a dragon while trapped in a dark pit is an excellent setup for a movie, but the Netflix trailer took things too far. It’s clear from the teased scenes that the protagonist successfully escapes since she is seen in her bedraggled and bloody state, walking through an ornate castle hall. What’s more, dialogue near the end of the trailer indicates a conversation between Queen Isabelle and Princess Elodie, in which the titular “damsel” threatens the queen, saying, “This is the end of your story“—something that must happen after her stint in the pit.

Still, the Damsel trailer takes the spoilers even further by showing Elodie walking across a bridge as a dragon’s shadow passes over her. Then, a castle is seen burning to the ground. This seems to imply that Brown’s character survived the dragon and somehow managed to use the beast against Queen Isabelle’s kingdom. Considering Damsel‘s promise to be a classic fairy tale with a twist, the idea of a doomed princess turning a dragon against her prince in a blaze of feminine rage is entirely delicious. Unfortunately, the trailer spoiled it.

Damsel’s Trailer Follows A Disappointing Movie Trend

Millie Bobby Brown's Eye Reflecting a Dragon and Millie Bobby Brown Holding A Sword in Damsel

It’s clear from Damsel‘s trailer that Netflix wanted to pull out all the stops to ensure that Brown’s upcoming film drew in a large audience. However, in doing so, it continued a frustrating and often disappointing movie trend. It’s far too often that a film holds no additional surprises than those shown in the trailer, and this is especially damning for a Netflix movie meant to divert fantasy clichés. By twisting the classic fairy tale “damsel in distress” trope, Damsel is supposed to use audiences’ expectations against them, but that can’t happen if no surprises are left.

It’s certainly possible that Damsel‘s trailer was intended to throw audiences even further off, but considering Netflix’s own unfortunate history with overly detailed trailers, this seems unlikely. Ultimately, the exciting teaser is likely to be enough to pique interest and gain Netflix a significant number of viewers when Damsel begins streaming on March 8th, 2024, but Brown’s fantasy film is in danger of poor reviews if it doesn’t deliver anything more than the trailer did.
