Did James Gunn’s DC Universe Cause The End Of The DC Animated Tomorrowverse? Creative Team Reveals The Truth

As the Tomorrowverse is ending with the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, the producers behind the animated conclusion open up on whether James Gunn’s DC Universe played a part in it. Despite having only started in 2020, the ongoing Tomorrowverse is officially coming to an end in 2024, through the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy. However, one of the ongoing theories has been that the Tomorrowverse’s conclusion is the result of Gunn’s new DC Universe, as Warner Bros. Discovery goes in a new direction for an interconnected superhero franchise.

During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths executive producer Butch Lukic and producer Jim Krieg were asked about the upcoming conclusion to the Tomorrowverse. When asked why the Tomorrowverse is ending so soon, Lukic and Krieg opened up about how it was always planned to do a 10-part story, ending it through these Justice League animated movies:

Butch Lukic: We already pre-planned this years ago that they [Warner Bros] were basically wanting us to do this universe in 10 movies. That’s all we were given. They didn’t want to go, the stretches of previous animated universes [with] 20 movies. They felt that was too long, so I was already with DC, Jim Lee, and Warner Bros, [in that] they already wanted to a 10-movie arc. Whatever happened afterwards would be someone else, a couple of producers would do another universe, which turned out to be the James Gunn-verse.

Jim Krieg: Honestly, we would have been happy to do 20 [movies.] But when you want to do 20, and someone offers you 10, you’d say yes anyway. We just had to pack as many characters and arcs into the first seven and the shorts, – don’t forget the shorts they’re germane, and canon to the end. We tried not to waste any time and hopefully everything we set up pays off in these last three movies.

DC’s upcoming slate of live-action movies may be exciting, but the brand is also set to release several anticipated animated features in 2024.

How James Gunn’s DC Universe Will Deal With Animated Movies & TV Shows

Gunn and Peter Safran have mostly announced their Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” plans for live-action DC Universe movies and TV shows. However, animation will play a crucial part in the franchise, too. With DC Studios going for more connectivity than even the DCEU, animated movies and TV shows set in the DC Universe will also be interwoven with their overall story.

In fact, the first DC Universe project for 2024 is the upcoming Creature Commandos show, for which Gunn wrote all the episodes when the initial announcement came out. The actors who got cast to voice the characters in Creature Commandos will also play them in live-action whenever they get used in other DC Universe projects. This will also be the case for other DC Studios animated properties, although right now, no other animated DC Universe projects have been announced yet.

Time will tell how the DC Universe will execute these plans, as there will be a lot of connectivity across TV and film in live-action and animation. It will also be interesting to see how Elseworlds projects play into DC Studios’ plans, as Gunn has indicated that non-DC Universe properties are also still on the table. Hopefully, more animated plans will be revealed by Gunn as the DC Universe comes to life later this year.
