Did Attack on Titan’s Armin End Up With Annie? Armin’s Ending Explained

Attack on Titan‘s recent conclusion was undeniably shocking and tear-jerking, containing a vast number of deaths and casualties suffered during the Rumbling. The majority of the main cast survived, except for main character Eren Jaeger, which begs the question: what did these other Eldians and Marleyans do after the threat of the Titans disappeared? The Rumbling began and ended when most of the main heroes were pretty young, leaving whole lives ahead of them.

Romance is not the main focus of Attack on Titan, since the series primarily depicted themes like the ineffectual nature of war and complex moral quandaries, such as whether it was ethical for Eren to attempt to wipe out humanity in an effort to save those he loved.

However, although it is not the predominant theme, love is crucial to the narrative of the series. Eren and Mikasa’s relationship is one of the most crucial and complex in the series, with the two sharing an indestructible bond. In spite of all the challenges and opposition the pair faced, their love never dwindled.

Did Armin And Annie Wind Up As A Couple?

Eren and Mikasa’s best friend, Armin Arlert, is one of the most necessary and intelligent characters in Attack on Titan. Promoted to 15th Commander of the Survey Corps, the Rumbling would never have ceased without Armin’s calm, rational decision-making talents and leadership ability. Throughout the series, he blossomed from a shy, anxious individual into a powerful, brave, and well-equipped leader of an entire army. Since the second season of the anime, sparks flew between Armin and another Survey Corps member, Annie Leonhart.

It is widely debated whether Armin and Annie wound up together, but evidence suggests the pair became official after the chaos of the Rumbling had ceased. In season 2, Armin and some other Survey Corps members devise a scheme to trick Annie into revealing her identity as the Female Titan. Annie is a fairly reserved and cautious person and Armin was the only person able to gain her trust. Furthermore, Annie encountered Armin while in her immensely overpowered and muscular Titan form, with every opportunity to kill the boy, but she did not, choosing to graciously spare his life.

After these miniscule clues that the two were fond of each other, Armin and Annie did not interact one-on-one often until a surprising new development featured in the anime’s final season. Annie hid inside a crystal for a four-year span and Armin visited her frequently to speak to her and keep her company. This is one of the most obvious hints of potential romantic feelings, at least on Armin’s side. His dedication to checking on Annie proves he felt at least some affection towards her. Annie was also able to hear him inside the crystal, though she could not respond.

Listening to Armin’s thoughtful words likely helped Annie’s fondness for Armin grow as well. Since Armin was the Colossal Titan, he did inherit Bertholdt’s memories, since he was the previous wielder. There is speculation that Armin only thinks he likes Annie romantically because of inherited feelings from Bertholdt. However, him and Annie’s previous interactions before he became the Colossal Titan seemed to strongly suggest otherwise, since there was already a spark between him and her before he even gained this ability or the memories. Even if Bertholdt’s lingering emotions caused Armin’s initial interest, their relationship had grown far beyond that potential catalyst.

The pair both blushed and acted incredibly shy and flirtatious during this moment, which all but confirmed their mutual romantic affection. Their relationship has been developing since the beginning of Attack on Titan, and although it was never confirmed for certain, their interactions strongly insinuate they became a couple.
