Diablo 2 Gets Major Update For the First Time in Over a Decade

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. An upcoming patch for Diablo II: Resurrected will make balance changes to the original Diablo II classes, more than a decade after the 1.13 Patch that the developers implemented in early 2010. Diablo II: Resurrected is a gorgeous reimagining of the original role-playing hack-and-slash that came out nearly 20 years ago. The full HD remaster allows players to re-experience the original game on modern platforms with 3D visuals in 4K, new animations, spell effects, a brand new Dolby 7.1 surround sound mix, and many more quality of life changes to impact the games’ overall immersion and gameplay.

Diablo II was created by Blizzard Entertainment and is often credited as the quintessential dungeon-crawler that changed the RPG genre. Released in 2000, the vast RPG utilized the 2D isometric-overhead camera view (similar to many other titles in the 90s) and placed a strong emphasis on character progression, story development, and exploration. With the help of Blizzard’s free online play service, Battle.net, the game went on to gain an enormous following and featured an online mode that allowed players to participate in the Ladder competing against other players in PvP. Almost two decades later, players now have the ability to import original saves into Diablo II: Resurrected and can continue their ventures in the world of Sanctuary.

Shared on the official Diablo Twitter, Activision Blizzard has announced that Diablo II: Resurrected will recieve a 2.4 Patch very soon. The patch notes posted on Blizzard’s official website reveal that the developers are planning to make balance changes to Diablo II‘s classes almost 11 years after its final patch in 2010. These changes will be made to create better distinctive character builds, continue the legacy of its 7 fantasy classes and keep each character unique to its class specialty. To fulfill these changes, the developers will review underused skills, assessing casting delays, and make quality-of-life changes over time.

Additionally, Diablo II: Resurrected will receive its First Ladder Season with four different Ladder modes that allow different styles of competitive multiplayer early next year. This will create separate in-game economies for competitive and non-competitive players and a scoreboard will now keep track of the top characters in each realm. A host of new Diablo II Rune Words will also be available to unlock and can be used to drastically boost a character’s viability as players race towards 99 on the Ladder.

While the original Diablo II is 20 years old, Resurrected is expected to expand upon it’s on gameplay and keep the title fresh for both new and old players. Patch 2.4 is coming to the title in 2022, so players can look forward to Diablo II: Resurrected keeping their attention for a while yet.

Diable 2: Resurrected is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
