Showtime’s Dexter has always toed the line between a tragic addict and a heroic vigilante, but in the latest Season 6 trailer, he’s downright saintly. The latest look at Dexter’s continuing trials gives us a subtle hint at the show’s renewed focus.
The minute-long video shows Michael C. Hall walking through a church strewn with religious regalia as his own voice-over considers the more positive effects of his serial killer ways. As Dexter comes to his conclusion (to the tune of Hallelujah) he’s framed as the very first psychopathic murderer blessed by The Almighty. Masuka (C.S. Lee) brings him back to reality in the middle of his blood-spattered element.
Dexter fans will note a distinct lack of children or babies in the video, one of the driving themes of Season 5. the trailer really is distilling the essence of a early season setup: Dexter, investigating a crime scene and considering the ramifications of his bloodthirsty nature. It’s got everything except, you know, the blood. If the next crop of episodes is aiming for a “return to normal,” it looks like they’re off to a good start.
At the same time, one wonders what changes will be made to Dexter’s motivations – to allow this renewed focus. It’s not like he can simply ignore baby Harrison, Astor or Cody, and he seems to be completely over the death of his wife Rita – which came about as a result of his ‘divinely inspired’ actions in the shocking fourth season finale.

Dexter’s inner monologue isn’t exactly covering new ground for the series, but that may be the point – Season 6 is intended to bring Dexter back to its roots. This will be achieved without the “big bad” of previous seasons – though Colin Hanks may be the next best thing.
Confirmed guest stars for Season 6 include Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica), Molly Parker (Deadwood) and Mos Def. This season showrunner duties have been passed from Chip Johannessen to Scott Buck, who has worked on Dexter for four years. Last season, the show was nominated for two Emmy awards (Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Lead Actor for Hall), an all-time low for the critically acclaimed series.
