Dev Patel’s New 2024 Action Movie Looks Like The Perfect John Wick Replacement

Dev Patel’s New 2024 Action Movie Looks Like The Perfect John Wick Replacement

An upcoming action movie starring Dev Patel looks to be the perfect replacement for the John Wick franchise. While John Wick 5 is reportedly in development, it’s unclear how long the Keanu Reeves franchise will continue after its anticipated 2025 or 2026 release date. Since the breakout success of the first John Wick film back in 2014, the movie series has become one of the most critically acclaimed and profitable original action franchises of the 21st century, among the ranks of Bourne and Mission: Impossible.

Since starring in the UK version of Skins as well as in Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, a Danny Boyle film that won Best Picture at the 2009 Oscars, Dev Patel has expanded into several genres including sci-fi, fantasy, and action. He notably starred in the 2015 movie Chappie from writer/director Neill Blomkamp and also has a recurring role in the critically acclaimed HBO series The Newsroom created by Aaron Sorkin. Patel has also recently started to take on projects behind the scenes as a director.

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man Looks Like An Indian John Wick Movie From The Trailer

With the new release of the trailer for the upcoming action film Monkey Man, Dev Patel has appeared to have taken great influence from the John Wick universe. Just from the trailer alone, there are already many notable similarities between the visual aesthetics, the fighting styles, and the gritty, in-your-face filmmaking approach. Monkey Man, which is also produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Nope) will mark Patel’s feature directorial debut. He will also star amongst a largely Indian cast.

Monkey Man, which was originally intended for a straight-to-streaming release on Netflix, will come out in theaters on April 5, 2024, after Universal acquired the rights. Producer Jordan Peele pushed to give Monkey Man a theatrical release because he felt that it was what the film deserved, especially taking into account the massive box office success of the John Wick franchise. Patel has starred in action thrillers before, such as 2018’s The Wedding Guest and Hotel Mumbai.

Monkey Man Looks Better Than Most Recent John Wick Copycats

There have been plenty of movies over the last decade that have tried to copy John Wick’s success and style, such as Bullet Train and arguably the recent Jason Statham film The Beekeeper. Judging from the initial trailer alone, Monkey Man looks like a better version than most and could become the true spiritual successor to the John Wick franchise at large, whenever Reeves finally decides to part ways with it. Monkey Man could also spark a new talent from Patel as a first-time director and unlikely action hero but still has much to prove before joining the ranks of John Wick.
