Despite F9’s Craziness, One Dom Moment Is Truly Its Weirdest

Out of all the unbelievable moments in F9, one scene with Dominic Toretto and a Corona is its weirdest by far. In F9, Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto gets his crew back together to save the world once again. This time, the enemy is John Cena’s Jakob Toretto. Though he was previously unmentioned, Jakob is Dom’s younger brother, and he’s out to hold the world’s weapons systems hostage. Dom’s crew has their work cut out for them. To bring Jakob down, they need to drive over landmines, attack enemy vehicles with electromagnets, and even fly a car to space.

Dom and Jakob have a tough history together. In 1989, the pair both worked on their father’s stock car pit crew and witnessed him have a fatal accident. Dom later learns Jakob may have tampered with the car and played a part in their father’s death. Like a true Toretto, Dom challenges Jakob to a race, telling his brother to leave forever if he loses. Of course, Dom wins, and Jakob takes off. The younger Toretto brother stays briefly with Buddy (Michael Rooker), who also worked on the pit crew, but he eventually leaves and becomes a dangerous spy before appearing in F9.

Though F9 has ridiculous moments, Dom delivers the weirdest scene. After learning Buddy might know Jakob’s whereabouts, Dom heads to Buddy’s garage and the pair talk about old times. Buddy gives Dom a beer, and it’s notable because it’s not just any beer. This beer is a Corona. Coronas have been a staple of the Fast and Furious franchise since the beginning. But despite that, Dom gets the information on Jakob and takes off. The scene ends without him drinking the beer.

Despite F9’s Craziness, One Dom Moment Is Truly Its Weirdest

With what Coronas mean to The Fast Saga, the scene is bizarre. In the first film in the franchise, Dom tells Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), “You can have any brew you want, as long as its a Corona.” The beer repeatedly shows up throughout the films, appearing whenever Dom’s team is celebrating or reconciling. With so many appearances, it’s theorized that Corona represents family in the Fast and Furious films. At the very least, it’s certainly more a part of the Fast family than Jakob Toretto. With Buddy getting the beer and offering it to Dom, it’s just courtesy for the older Toretto brother to take a swig. Leaving the beer is completely out of character for Dom. It makes even less sense than Ludacris flying a Pontiac Fiero into outer space.

Though it’s a strange scene, there could be reasons for it. Dom doesn’t reconcile with Jakob before finding Buddy. If Corona does mean family in the Fast and Furious films, this could be why Dom doesn’t drink the beer. Also, the scene could’ve been changed in the final cut of the film. If moments were cut for time, Dom could’ve had some quality sips of beer before heading out to find Jakob. It just didn’t make the movie. When it comes to the odd scene, F9 just had to pour one out.
