Why Dune 3 Is Even More Important Than Part 2

Dune 2 sees the rise of Emperor Paul Atreides. However, Dune 3 is where the repercussions of Paul’s messianic destiny are truly revealed.

Screen Rant spoke with director Denis Villeneuve about his sequel, Dune: Part 2. He explained how shooting Dune: Part 1 helped him prepare for Dune: Part 2 and the challenges he faced both as a director and writer with the sequel. Villeneuve also discussed the changes he made while adapting the story and how Chalamet has grown as an actor.

Denis Villeneuve Talks Dune: Part 2

Screen Rant: What did you find to be the most difficult part of adapting the second half of the book that’s filled with more otherworldly elements in this film?

Denis Villeneuve: Two things. First, it was technically much more challenging because there’s much more action, and we had the same timeframe to shoot Part 2 and Part 1. And it was more challenging for my crew because it technically was much more complex. Also, from the screenwriting point of view, I felt that the challenge was to make sure that if someone had not seen Part 1, they will still enjoy Part 2; that Part 2 will be an autonomous movie. Still, it is the direct continuity of Part 1, but to make sure that you can enjoy Part 2 without having seen Part 1. That was one of the challenges in the screenwriting.

Did filming Part 1 and 2 separately rather than together change your approach to anything at all? Did the story always stay the same, or did your experience on Dune 1 change your approach to Dune 2?

Denis Villeneuve: Absolutely. First of all, I’m alive. If I had to shoot both movies simultaneously, I would be dead right now. It’s too much, exhausting. But it allowed me to rest a little. And I learned so many things by doing Part 1. I learned so much about my craft that my toolbox became bigger, because Part 2 was a much bigger challenge technically.

What were some of the big changes you made from the book to the film?

Denis Villeneuve: There’s one major [one], and I want to be careful with spoilers right now because I’d love to talk about that once the movie’s out. But I will say that when Frank Herbert wrote the book, and then when the book came out, he was disappointed by how people perceived Paul Atreides. At the time, he felt that people were talking about Paul as a hero, and for him, he was an anti-hero.

He was a dark figure. The book was a warning for him about a Messianic figure. And for that, he wrote Dune Messiah to correct [that] and to make sure that people understood his intention. I knew that story. I had the benefit of having read Dune Messiah, so I wrote Part 2 having that in mind. That is why Chani’s character is slightly different in my adaptation than in the book, and it helped me to bring the initial intention of Frank Herbert to the screen.

Dune 2 Trailer Feyd vs Paul

You’ve seen Timothée Chalamet evolve as an actor from Dune 1 to Dune 2, and you even said that Timothée was learning to find his focus on such a large production as a leading man. How did Timothée’s evolution as an actor help create Paul’s evolution that we see in Dune 2?

Denis Villeneuve: It was, for me, phenomenal to see him becoming [a man]. He was a boy in Part 1, and then bringing this boy to being a man; to become that charismatic dark figure, to become this power that is the Lisan al-Gaib on the screen. I thought Timothée did a fantastic job, and I was moved many times to see how he, as an actor onscreen, gets much more confident and even better on set as he became a real leading man.

I felt he was much more comfortable in Part 2. He knew how to protect himself, his focus, and to become someone who brings all of the actors together in a high spirit. I really love working with Timothée much more. It was a great experience in Part 1, but a fantastic experience in Part 2.
