Delayed God of War Series ‘Fallen God’ Finally Gets a Release Date

PS5s are still nearly impossible to find and God of WarRagnarok, although slated to drop this year, still doesn’t have a specific release date set, but that won’t stop fans from getting a little more Kratos action in their lives. Dark Horse Comics has announced a brand new God of War comic miniseries that bridges the gap between the original trilogy and the 2018 reboot, and the first issue finally has an official release date!

Back in 2018, God of War released for PS4 to massive critical and fan praise, completely revamping and revitalizing the classic franchise. No longer set in Greek mythology, the update to the franchise found itself diving deep into Norse lore (something popularized in today’s pop culture by the likes of Marvel bringing Thor into the spotlight). Closer camera angles and a tighter story, amongst other updates, were a surprisingly welcomed change that brought new life to an already beloved gaming universe. Placing the once vengeance-driven Kratos in the role of a now struggling-to-be responsible father on a mission, the game left many fans curious about the time gap between the events of God of War III and this reboot. Luckily, all of the questions fans have are now set to be answered in the upcoming series God of War: Fallen God.

This isn’t Kratos’s first journey into the realm of comics, and author of the previous God of War comic series, Chris Roberson, has returned to yet again script the character. Alongside Robernson are Eisner-nominated artist Tony Parker, colorist Dan Jackson and letterer John Roshell, with covers by Dave Rapoza. Having handled the character before, the team has already proven themselves worthy of the responsibility that comes with translating a video game character, especially one with such deep lore, to the page. After a delay last year, fans will be pleased to know that the series is now officially launching this spring with a  release date for the first issue set for March 10, 2021.

Delayed God of War Series ‘Fallen God’ Finally Gets a Release Date

God of War: Fallen God follows Kratos after the events of God of War III, leading up to his newfound role as father. Having bested Athena and defeated Zeus, he believed himself to be finally free of his bondage. In an attempt to distance himself from his shame, his home, and his past, he sets sail for the desert, only to discover that his guilt and rage can’t be so easily left behind. Kratos finds himself trapped to face the one foe that has proven to be unconquerable—himself.

God of War III famously leaves off with a post credit scene that shows a trail of blood leading away from the abandoned Blade of Olympus. Picking up where this trail left off, it’s the gap between that and the eventual settling down of Kratos that this comic intends to fill in, leaving plenty of room to watch Kratos grow from the martyr for humanity into his own man, one capable of loving another individual again. His journey to find himself, and, eventually, a new wife are sure to be a key focal point of these issues.

The miniseries will be broken up into four issues. God of War: Fallen God is currently is available for pre-order at your local comic shop, and will hopefully help hold fans over as they patiently await God of War: Ragnarok.
