Death on the Nile Trailer: Kenneth Branagh Investigates A Wedding Murder

A new Death on the Nile trailer arrives teasing murder is just the beginning in Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie sequel adaptation. The film serves as a follow-up to Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express, in which iconic private detective Hercule Poirot investigated a death aboard the titular train and the ensemble roster of suspects at the heart of the mystery. Death on the Nile picks up with Poirot setting sail on a steamboat after being invited to celebrate the wedding of a picture-perfect couple, though when a dead body is discovered on board, he must put his skills to work to find the perpetrator behind the murder.

Though Murder on the Orient Express proved to be a mixed critical bag, the film was a smash financial success, sparking 20th Century Fox’s interest in developing a sequel with Branagh returning to star, produce and direct. The five-time Oscar nominee has built a star-studded roster around him including returning star Tom Bateman, Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, Letitia Wright and Russell Brand. With production having ran from September to December of 2019, Death on the Nile is finally gearing up to hit theaters this February.

With just a month remaining until the film’s arrival, 20th Century Studios has debuted a new Death on the Nile trailer. The video teases that murder is just the beginning to the mystery at the heart of the story and invites audiences to “the social event of the year.” Check out the new trailer below:

The latest Death on the Nile trailer continues to the previous marketing for the film as Armie Hammer’s central role continues to be downplayed on the heels of his sexual assault allegations. Those familiar with Agatha Christie’s source novel or its 1978 film adaptation will remember the importance of Simon Doyle to the plot of the film and the murder driving the mystery forward, leaving many concerned neither Disney nor 20th Century Studios elected to reshoot his material. However, given his extensive role and A-list cast members involved, it would prove rather difficult to bring the stars back together amidst the pandemic than remove him.

It will be interesting to see how Death on the Nile fares at the box office heading into its February release with the controversies of both Hammer and Letitia Wright amidst her anti-vaccination scandals on the set of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the lead up to the release of Murder on the Orient Express, Branagh expressed his interest in developing an Agatha Christie cinematic universe, which will be dependent on whether the film holds up against Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall and Jackass Forever. Only time will tell what the future holds when Death on the Nile hits theaters on February 11.
