Dear Evan Hansen Trailer Brings The Broadway Hit To The Big Screen

The official trailer for the Dear Evan Hansen movie has finally dropped, and it shows Ben Platt reprising his iconic Broadway role as the eponymous character. Platt leads a cast that includes Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams, Danny Pino, Colton Ryan, Amandla Stenberg, and Nik Dodani. Dear Evan Hansen is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 24, 2021.

Dear Evan Hansen is one of the biggest musicals of the past decade, earning nine Tony Award nominations in 2017 and winning six, including Best Musical and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Platt. The story follows the titular Evan, a shy high school student struggling with loneliness, who becomes wrapped up in a massive lie after one of his classmates, Connor, dies by suicide. Desperate for a sense of belonging that he has long lacked, Evan creates a false story about being friends with Connor, becoming increasingly entangled with Connor’s family in the process.

That story is on full display in the new trailer from Universal Pictures, which shows off Platt, Moore, Dever, and the rest of the cast. There’s plenty of the show’s iconic, award-winning music as well, promising a loyal adaptation that could be just as powerful as the original. Watch the Dear Evan Hansen trailer below.

Ben Platt shot to superstardom after his performance in the Broadway version of Dear Evan Hansen, and he’s recently featured in a number of prominent movies and shows including the Ryan Murphy-led Netflix original series The Politician. Though he had previously appeared in the Pitch Perfect movies, his Tony-winning performance and the success of the Evan Hansen soundtrack launched him even higher. As such, it’s fun to see him returning to the role one last time – even if he is pushing the believability of playing a teenager at 27 years old.

2021 will be a big year for film adaptations of Broadway hits, as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first Tony-winning musical In the Heights is also being brought to the big screen in early June. In the Heights is directed by Jon M. Chu and stars an ensemble cast including Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, and Leslie Grace. The movies have been something for theatergoers to look forward to while Broadway has been shut down during the covid-19 pandemic, though nothing is ever quite the same as a live performance. Thankfully, Broadway will be open once again by the time Dear Evan Hansen arrives in movie theaters on September 24.
