Deadpool Concept Art Resurfaces 14 Years After X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Creator Still “Horrified”

Horrifying Deadpool concept art from Hugh Jackman’s first Wolverine solo movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, gets a blunt reaction from Deadpool’s co-creator. Ryan Reynolds and Jackman will soon reunite on the big screen for their first Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure, with Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3 opposite Reynolds’ Wade Willson allowing for the two actors to finally share the screen as comic book-accurate versions of their characters, as their only film together was the ill-received X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which botched Deadpool.

On Twitter, Deadpool comic book co-creator Rob Liefeld had a blunt reaction to the concept art of the character for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The concept art shows multiple alternate looks for Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with every single concept looking creepy and not at all comic book-accurate, which makes Liefeld’s response easy to understand, with the Deadpool co-creator saying, “Horrified then, horrified still….”

Why X-Men Origins – Wolverine Got Deadpool So Wrong

Deadpool is popularly known in the comics as the Merc with a Mouth due to the character not only being a skilled killer but also being one of the most talkative characters in Marvel Comics, rivaling Spider-Man in the quips per second department. Reynolds has brought that key aspect of the character to life perfectly in his two solo movies as Deadpool so far, but X-Men Origins: Wolverine couldn’t have gotten it more wrong.

The Wolverine origin movie featured Reynolds’ Wade Wilson with his mouth sewn shut at the end of the film, killing the mutant’s most popular characteristic. That was not the only controversial choice made by the movie, with Deadpool’s iconic red and black suit seen in Reynolds’ Deadpool movies never making it to the screen in the X-Men film, which gave the character weird tattoos.

Besides losing his ability to make jokes and being noticeably different visually from how he is in the comics, Deadpool also got a major rework of his powers for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In the film, Deadpool, or Weapon XI, got long blades that came from his hands, the ability to teleport, the power to control technology, an Adamantium skeleton, optic blasts, and more. All those powers led to a very different Deadpool from the one Marvel fans will get to see in the MCU’s Deadpool 3 appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
