Deadpool 3 Villain Will Repeat A Tragic Phase 4 Story With A Sinister Twist According To MCU Theory

Deadpool 3 Villain Will Repeat A Tragic Phase 4 Story With A Sinister Twist According To MCU Theory

A powerful new villain is set to be introduced in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, perhaps putting a spin on a sinister villain story from Phase 4 of the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine’s first trailer was released in February 2024, revealing the returns of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in an epic adventure that will bring the Merc-with-a-Mouth into the MCU permanently. Reynolds and Kevin Feige confirmed the development of Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine shortly after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and the project is set to change the shape of the MCU forever.

As revealed in Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer, the Phase 5 project will see Reynolds’ Wade Wilson captured by the Time Variance Authority and sent on a mysterious mission. This appears to lead him to the Void at the end of time, first seen in 2021’s Loki season 1, where Deadpool is set to meet several X-Men characters, including Aaron Stanford’s returning John Allerdyce, a.k.a. Pyro. Despite the pre-existing dangers of the Void, Deadpool and Wolverine will also battle a new X-Men villain, and this exciting debut could put a sinister twist on a story that Marvel Studios has already explored.

X-Men Villain Cassandra Nova Explained

British actor Emma Corrin was cast in Deadpool & Wolverine on February 14, 2023, and was said to be portraying the movie’s undisclosed villain. While Marvel Studios hasn’t actually provided official confirmation of the antagonist that Corrin will be portraying, their role has been all but confirmed to be that of Cassandra Nova, an incredibly powerful villain from Marvel Comics. Cassandra Nova first appeared in 2001’s New X-Men #114, and was introduced as a “Mummudrai”, a parasitic life-form born without a body, but Cassandra created her form by copying the DNA of Charles Xavier, since the pair were born simultaneously.

Hell-bent on destruction, Cassandra Nova is Professor X’s ideological dark shadow and twin sister. Cassandra formed her body in the womb with Xavier, but was miscarried after an attempt to strangle the unborn Xavier with the umbilical cord. Cassandra spent years reforming her body, during which time she became convinced that only she and Xavier were real, and that it was her purpose to destroy everything else, considering the world to be an illusion. Cassandra Nova is a sinister foe who has shown no qualms about committing heinous acts, so she is an intense addition to Deadpool & Wolverine’s cast.

Cassandra Nova Can Be A More Malicious Version Of Sylvie

Sylvie in the darkness in the MCU's Phase 4

Emma Corrin’s debut as Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine could put a dark spin on the story of Loki and Sylvie in the MCU’s Phase 4. Sophia Di Martino debuted as Sylvie, a variant of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, in Loki season 1, and was introduced during her mission to destroy the TVA, who had been chasing her ever since she escaped from them as a child. Sylvie soon formed a close bond with Loki, and the pair eventually fought together to save the TVA, reshaping the organization for the better, but Cassandra Nova likely won’t have such good intentions.

While Cassandra Nova could be introduced as the Mummudrai copy of Professor X, it may make more sense to alter her into an evil female variant of Xavier. This would fit better in the Multiverse Saga, and mirror the dynamic between Loki and Sylvie in the MCU’s Phase 4, particularly since Patrick Stewart has been rumored to return as Professor X in Deadpool & Wolverine. Just as the TVA fought to capture Sylvie, the organization may be sending Deadpool on a mission to defeat Cassandra Nova, with her significant power perhaps being too powerful for the TVA to handle alone.

Cassandra Nova Can Help Set Up The MCU’s X-Men

Patrick Stewart's Professor X using his telepathy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It hasn’t yet been revealed exactly which reality Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova will have come from, but since she seems to show up in the Void in Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer, there are several options. It’s possible Cassandra Nova comes from 20th Century Fox’s previous X-Men film franchise, connecting her to Reynolds’ version of Deadpool and the Professor X who is expected to return. It’s also possible that this version of Cassandra Nova helms from the same universe that Monica Rambeau became trapped in at the end of The Marvels, creating new connections to the wider world of the MCU.

Another option may provide Marvel Studios with the perfect opportunity to directly tease the MCU’s official X-Men team from Earth-616, as it’s possible that Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova could be coming from the MCU’s main continuity. This reveal would confirm that a version of Professor X already exists in the MCU’s world, which perhaps hints at the X-Men team already having been formed. Marvel Studios has confirmed the development of an X-Men reboot for the MCU, so it won’t be long before Earth-616’s mutants are making themselves known, and this could happen as early as 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
