Deadpool 3 Plot Reveal Sets Up The MCU Reboot 3 Years Earlier Than Expected In Wild Marvel Movie Theory

A wild fan theory suggests that Marvel Studios may use Phase 5’s upcoming Deadpool 3 to reboot the MCU, three years before the franchise is rumored to be resetting after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Deadpool 3 was confirmed to be in development shortly after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox’s properties in 2019, allowing Ryan Reynolds to return as Wade Wilson’s Deadpool. Scheduled for release on July 26, 2024, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 will see Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine explore the multiverse, but new details suggest the project may have a much larger impact on the future of the MCU.

While the details of Deadpool 3’s storyline haven’t been revealed, the project is one of the MCU’s most exciting additions, and has recently been claimed to bring the franchise “back to life,” (via BroBible). With Reynolds and Jackman reprising their beloved mutant roles, and the potential for other X-Men cameos, Deadpool 3 has the star-power to become one of Marvel Studios’ most successful projects. The film is sure to change the status quo of the MCU, most notably by introducing mutants en masse, but a new theory suggests Deadpool 3 might actually have a much more widespread effect on the MCU.

Deadpool 3 Reboots The MCU In Wild Fan Theory

Deadpool 3’s first plot synopsis, which was unveiled on Marvel’s Japanese website (via The Direct), suggests that “the irresponsible hero Deadpool will change the history of the MCU with Wolverine.” This is a major update on the upcoming Phase 5 project, and seems to imply that Deadpool and Wolverine’s actions will have a massive impact on the future of the MCU. This has spurred a theory suggesting that Deadpool 3 could actually bring about Marvel Studios’ rumored reboot of the MCU, which has been speculated to occur following the events of 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars in the MCU’s Phase 6.

Marvel Comics’ epic Secret Wars event in 2015 ended with a new continuity being established in the Marvel Universe, bringing characters together from alternate realities to inhabit the same space. The same idea has been rumored to be happening in the MCU’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which would make for the easy integration of mutants into the MCU, and could allow past characters to be recast and return to the franchise. Even though Avengers: Secret Wars might be the most obvious place to reboot the MCU, Deadpool 3’s plot synopsis seems to suggest that something of this magnitude could happen much earlier.

An MCU Reboot In Deadpool 3 Would Massively Impact Subsequent Stories

Avengers: Secret Wars being rumored to reboot the MCU might make a considerable amount of sense, as the project is set to conclude Phase 6 and the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, allowing a new continuity to begin with the start of Phase 7. Deadpool 3, in comparison, is expected to release in the middle of Phase 5, which could be an unorthodox place for a soft-reboot of the franchise. It means that, if Deadpool 3 does take steps to reboot, or at least change a few aspects of the MCU’s continuity, Marvel Studios’ upcoming Multiverse Saga projects may be altered dramatically.

A reboot of the MCU in Deadpool 3 would have a huge impact on upcoming projects such as Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts and Blade, but this could provide the perfect explanation for where the Fantastic Four have been ahead of their debut in Phase 6. This would also have an effect on Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows, including Daredevil: Born Again, Ironheart, Wonder Man and Vision Quest. While an early MCU reboot could be controversial, there are some major benefits to Deadpool 3 rewriting the MCU, particularly as the franchise heads towards Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars.

Mutants Can Play A Huge Role In Phase 6 If Deadpool 3 Reboots The MCU

One of the most complex topics of discussion concerning the MCU in recent years has been how Marvel Studios will introduce mutants and the X-Men into the franchise. In Marvel Comics, many mutant characters have intricate backstories tied to major moments in human history, such as Magneto’s childhood as a survivor of the Holocaust, and changing these to fit the present day timeline of the MCU would be problematic. While some have theorized that mutants could join the MCU from an alternate reality, the most popular idea suggests that the X-Men may be integrated into the MCU following a reboot.

A potential MCU reboot in 2024’s Deadpool 3 means mutants and the X-Men could be joining the MCU much sooner than anyone expected. Marvel Studios is developing an X-Men reboot for the MCU, so this could perhaps release as part of Phase 6 if an altered continuity is established in Deadpool 3. This could even allow mutants to play a major role in Phase 6’s Avengers projects, marking the first introductions of the Avengers and the X-Men in live-action. Deadpool 3 is expected to feature several cameos from Fox’s X-Men characters, but could also debut the MCU’s official mutant team.

Deadpool 3’s MCU Reboot Can Solve Recent Marvel Problems

Deadpool 3 may seem too early to reboot the MCU, but with the state of the franchise drawing criticism and scrutiny in recent years, an early reboot may be the perfect way to solve some of the MCU’s biggest issues. One of the biggest problems this could solve is what to do about Kang the Conqueror. Jonathan Majors’ 2023 conviction saw him fired from Marvel Studios, leaving Kang’s future in the MCU unclear. There has been speculation that Kang’s storyline will be dropped, but Marvel Studios could easily recast the Multiverse Saga villain if Deadpool 3 reboots the MCU’s continuity.

Other controversial and problematic choices, such as the Scarlet Witch’s demise in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the Eternals’ changed origin story in Eternals and Secret Invasion’s disappointing storyline could all be retconned or rewritten to be more comic-accurate and people-pleasing in a rebooted MCU. The idea of Deadpool and Wolverine changing the history of the MCU as well as meddling with the franchise’s multiverse suggests that the impact of their actions will be massive in scale. So, while it may seem unlikely, Deadpool 3 might actually feature the most world-changing event in the history of the MCU.
