Deadpool 3 Could Have Morbius Jokes (Because of the Memes)

The screenwriters for Deadpool 3 tease that the upcoming installment of the Wade Wilson-focused franchise may have Morbius jokes due to the many memes. While the X-Men cinematic universe had a shaky finish before Disney’s 21st Century Fox acquisition, the Deadpool franchise remained successful. Starring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, the success of Deadpool 2 paved the way for a third installment to be put into development. But once Disney completed its acquisition, it seemed it was over for Deadpool, as Marvel Studios are looking to reboot the X-Men down the line.

However, while they’re reimagining the Mutants, Reynolds’ Deadpool is being integrated into the MCU, with Deadpool 3 set to happen from Marvel Studios. While Marvel Studios have co-involvement with Sony’s Spider-Man films, including franchises like Venom and Morbius, Deadpool 3 will be the first X-Men-related film produced entirely by Disney. Reynolds is officially attached to reprise the role of Wade Wilson, with details still being kept heavily under wrap what the MCU will do with Deadpool 3.

Even though plot points haven’t been disclosed, Deadpool 3 may take a dig or two at Morbius. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who penned the first two Deadpool films, recently appeared on the Post-Credit Podcast, where Morbius briefly came up during the conversation. While neither of them had seen the critically and box office-flopping Sony film, Reese and Wernick were told about the massive Morbius memes that emerged since its release. Once the podcast host explained the memes to the respective Deadpool 3 writers, Wernick and Reese may be jumping on the chance to include a few gags at Morbius, sharing the following:

Wernick: “Now we’ll have to.”

Reese: “Now it’s on our radar.”

Given the nature of the Deadpool franchise, having Wade bring up Morbius memes from the Internet wouldn’t be a stretch at all. Since the first Deadpool film, they have always found ways to break the fourth wall – an essential part of Wade’s character in the comics – and make fun of pop culture, including other superheroes. One great example is Reynolds’ Green Lantern past, with the Deadpool films dragging the 2011 disaster movie where he starred as Hal Jordan. They have even gone as far as ridiculing the universally-disliked take on Deadpool in X-Men: Origins Wolverine, which was retconned after X-Men: Days of Future Past, allowing Reynolds to get another chance at playing the Merc with a Mouth.

Given what the past Deadpool movies have done regarding commentary, Deadpool 3 having fun with Morbius’ failure will likely be top-notch. However, as hilarious as many dig at Morbius would be, the bigger focus is how Marvel Studios will be tackling integrating Deadpool into the larger MCU. Not only will they be keeping Wade’s whole franchise canon, but Deadpool 3 will still be R-rated. Given that Phase 4 is packed already, it will be quite some time before Deadpool 3 happens, and it remains to be seen whether or not the movie will have any inclusion of Morbius.
