DC’s Sandman: Nightmare Country Continues With New Miniseries in 2023

Fans of The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country, an acclaimed miniseries continuing the story of the nightmarish monster The Corinthian — made infamous from Neil Gaiman‘s carefully curated Sandman Universe — will be delighted to hear that a sequel series, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House, will release in April 2023.

Ever since 2018 DC Comics has been partnering with Sandman architect Neil Gaiman to craft and curate an ongoing collection of various Sandman Universe series that expand on Gaiman’s classic Vertigo Sandman series, which was recently adapted into the acclaimed Netflix series The Sandman. While there have been various Sandman Universe titles released, Nightmare Country in particular has captured the raptured attention of Sandman fans, mainly due to impeccable writing by horror master James Tynion IV and the focus on The Corinthian, a fan favorite “villain” from the Sandman comic and TV series.

DC Comics has announced a whole slew of exciting news connected to the ever-expanding Sandman Universe, including two different trade paperback collections of the first volume of The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country, a sequel series to Nightmare Country, and an entirely new limited series The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives, which will follow the misadventures of child ghost detectives Edwin and Charles. James Tynion IV – master horror writer known for Wynd, Something is Killing the Children, and Nice House on the Lake – will continue his DC Black Label series Nightmare Country with illustration by first volume artist Lisandro Estherren and a crew of acclaimed guest artists, who often illustrate sequences of characters in “The Dreaming.” The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country Vol. 1 was a beautiful, horrifying, intimate glimpse into the horror’s of modern America, introducing the terrifying villains Mr. Agony and Mr. Ecstasy, and setting up some type of glorious showdown between fallen angels, Satan, American billionaires, the scary yet disturbingly existential Corinthian. The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country writer James Tynion IV had this to say about Nightmare Country – The Glass House:

“I’m thrilled to announce that Nightmare Country’s follow-up miniseries, The Glass House, is coming early in 2023. The Corinthian is going to be making his way to Silicon Valley, where he will go head-to-head with Angels, Demons, and a breed of creature far more terrifying that anything he’s faced before—Venture Capitalists. Lisandro and I are excited to continue this nightmare tour through modern America and can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve got in store for you.”

The Corinthian Can’t Help But Be A Nightmare

DC Comics also unveiled gorgeous covers for Nightmare Country – The Glass House #1 and #2, illustrated by Reiko Murakami, a haunting cover for Dead Boy Detectives #1, with art by Nimit Malavia, as well as an ethereal and terrifying connecting cover between Glass House and Dead Boy Detectives, illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. Excitingly, Dead Boy Detectives — written by Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian) with art by Jeff Stokely and Miquel Muerto — will tie directly into the ongoing plots and reveals in Nightmare Country – The Glass House. The conclusion to the first volume of Nightmare Country reintroduced Thessaly — first introduced in 1991’s The Sandman #32, “A Game Of You”a powerful and ancient witch living in Hollywood, who will play a starring role in Dead Boy Detectives that intermingles with the path the Corinthian and Madison Flynne are set upon. Series writer Pichetshote reports, “Despite Thessaly the witch being a big player in James and Lisandro’s Nightmare Country, Dead Boy Detectives can still progress her story while telling this very personal horror tale about Thai ghosts in Los Angeles—in events that will go on and feed directly back into Nightmare Country.” This feat is made possible because of Dead Boy Detectives release between Nightmare Country Vol. 1 and Nightmare Country – The Glass House.

The Corinthian’s fascinating and dark path towards possible redemption will continue in the expanding Sandman Universe, curated by the legendary Neil Gaiman, as they cross paths with Thessaly, Edwin, and Charles in Dead Boy Detectives, a crossover sure to delight any Sandman fan.

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House will debut in stores on April 4th, 2023.
