DC’s Powerful New Villain Has a Shocking Connection to a Major Cosmic Force

Warning! Contains spoilers for Birds of Prey #7!

The latest DC Comics villain is making terrifying use of the Red, one of DC’s major cosmic forces. The Birds of Prey are back in action to find out just who is trying to kill Barbara Gordon — and why. While investigating, the Birds come across the shocking realization that this new villain is connected to the Red, and they’re using it to kill Babs.

As the Birds try to save the fan-favorite Bat-Family member Barbara Gordon in Birds of Prey #7 by Kelly Thompson and Javier Pina, they discover that this villain is using the Red to travel through time (much like Maps Mizoguchi has been using the Green). Exactly who this villain is — and why they’re targeting Babs — is yet to be discovered, but the team meets up with Red-connected superhero Vixen to learn more.

When the Birds of Prey reformed, Barbara’s absence was immediately noticeable to long-time fans of the team. While some assumed she’d simply been left out, the real reason is far more concerning. As the time-traveling hero Meridian reveals, in every timeline where Babs joins them on a mission, she ends up getting killed. There’s a villain manipulating the time stream to try and ensure Babs dies.

What Are the Green & the Red? – Birds of Prey Discover a New Villain Using DC’s Cosmic Forces

Comic book panel: Vixen taps into the Red to use the power of a lion.

The Green is one of the most powerful cosmic forces in the DC Universe. The cosmic force that controls and grants life to all plant life in the universe, major characters like Swamp Thing and Poison Ivy have both tapped into the Green, with Poison Ivy even using it to take over the world at one point. Swamp Thing is famously powered by the Green, and much of what fans know about the force comes from Swamp Thing lore. No matter what planet a plant is on, it’s connected to the Green. It’s not yet known how Meridian is using the Green to time travel —but the villain targeting Babs has been using a related cosmic force to target her.

There are numerous cosmic forces in the DCU, and while the Green is likely the most well-known, it’s not the only cosmic force that can be used for time travel. Babs and the rest of the Birds learn that the villain targeting her is using the Red to move through time. The Red is a cosmic force that connects all meat-based living things. From the smallest insects to the largest animals, humans included, they’re all connected by the Red. Characters whose powers tap into animals, like Vixen and Animal Man, are both connected to the Red. How the villain is using the Red to target Babs is also not currently known, but it will surely have major consequences.

There’s currently a lot that isn’t known about this villain and their mysterious connection to The Red, or their apparent hatred of Barbara Gordon. Having the Birds of Prey solve this big mystery will not only save Babs’ life but will likely completely change how people view the cosmic forces in the DC Universe. While everyone thought they knew what the Green and the Red were capable of within the world of DC Comics, using them to time travel completely changes the rules, and the Birds of Prey are going to have to learn exactly what these new rules are in order to save Barbara Gordon.
