DC’s Newest God-Blessed Hero Takes Shazam’s Powers to the Next Level

DC’s Newest God-Blessed Hero Takes Shazam’s Powers to the Next Level

Warning: Spoilers for Birds of Prey #6!

Black Canary’s sister, Sin Lance, has ascended to hero status with a new, stronger twist on Shazam’s powers. When Billy Batson first started his journey as the Champion of Shazam, he became imbued by the gods with their power. Sin Lance, though, is now actually sharing her body with a god to become DC’s newest super-powered hero.

Sin officially gets her new powers and costume in Birds of Prey #6 by Kelly Thompson and Leonardo Romero. The moment comes as the conclusion of the revamped title’s first arc, in which Black Canary forms a new squad to save her sister from a threat on Themyscira. Sin became a target of the god Megaera, who was looking to steal her body to unleash the DC equivalent of Ragnarök.

Thanks to an unexpected bargain, Megaera and Sin agree to share a body, gifting DC a new hero with a Shazam-esque twist. As proven by Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth, Sin will be in control of their body, but Megaera will share her powers — giving Sin a cool new green-and-black costume to boot.

Sin Lance Officially Becomes a Shazam-Like Superhero

Comic book panels: Wonder Woman interrogates Megaera in Sin Lance's body.

In the series’ first issue, Black Canary assembles the Birds of Prey with one mission in mind: save her sister. On good authority from the future version of Maps — a Gotham Academy fan-favorite turned time-traveler — Dinah learns that her sister is in danger of having her body held captive by a god on Themyscira. Unfortunately, the team’s efforts are all for naught, as Megaera does manage to bond with Sin, attempting to corrupt her completely. However, Sin is willing to dispose of herself before she allows Megaera to use her body to hurt anyone.

Beyond the Birds being seconds away from imprisoning both Megaera and Sin in an urn, Megaera understands that Sin has no qualms with ensuring both of their deaths, so a compromise is bargained upon: Megaera will reside in Sin’s body, but Sin will have full control of her actions. What results is a melding of the two, with Sin sporting a new costume and the powers of a god, all without the drawbacks of world destruction. Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth confirms that Sin is in full control and Megaera is ready to follow Sin’s lead.

Sin Lance’s Power Upgrade Takes Godhood to a New Level

Comic book panels: Wonder Woman Threatens Megaera

On one hand, the word of a god who just spent the last couple of issues wiping out Amazons is hard to take at face value, something Wonder Woman is surely fully aware of. However, Sin’s power boost gives readers a new way of envisioning “godhood” in the scope of the DC Universe. The Shazam family all showcase how a human can handle being bestowed the shared power of the gods, but Sin Lance living with a god in the same body allows her to not just borrow that power, but essentially be the source she’s pulling her power from.

Birds of Prey #6 is on sale now from DC Comics.
