DC’s New ‘Justice League Dark’ Deserves To Be Their Next Big Team

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1!It looks like the DC Universe may have a revamped, expanded version of Justice League Dark. Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1 reveals a new collection of magical warriors and makes an interesting case for them to unite as a team in the future.

Though the DCU has the Justice League to protect the Earth when worldwide calamities strike, the team doesn’t handle every major event that threatens all existence. In fact, when it comes to more magical threats, it’s usually up to a more specialized group of crime-fighters to handle the world’s more arcane menaces. The group known as Justice League Dark has a roster filled out with some of the DC Universe’s most iconic and powerful occult figures. Zatanna, Swamp Thing, John Constantine, and Deadman are just some of the heroes that have united in the name of keeping the world’s magic in balance.

And it seems that in the wake of a magical war, a new version of the team may have just assembled. In Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1 by Mark Waid and Riccardo Federici, a powerful and magic storm is spreading across the world. Damian Wayne assembles the few heroes he can and sends several to the Tower of Fate in order to retrieve the powerful items that the Devil Nezha drained of their magical properties. Zatanna, Power Girl, Shazam, Cyborg, and Blue Beetle try to penetrate the tower, but find its defenses impossible to overcome. However, once Mary realizes that the storm is bringing on powerful electricity, she utters the magic word “Shazam!” and is able to finally break through the Tower of Fate’s walls. But instead of arcane items, the ragtag crew finds a huge menagerie of the DC Universe’s greatest magic users.

Is This The DC Universe’s New Justice League Dark?

It’s no secret that there’s some serious firepower to this group: The Green Lantern Alan Scott, Phantom Stranger, Ragman, even villains such as Jinx, Tannarak, and the Queen of Fables are a part of this collective. There’s also little doubt that each of them has a strong desire to make Nezha pay for his stealing of their items, as well as mind-controlling them. This shared goal could be the foundation on which a new Justice League Dark is formed.

Granted, there have been other magic-based teams such as Shadowpact or the Sentinels of Magic, but a potential team this large is absolutely worthy of a Justice League name. A team with this many magic users is an idea bursting with potential, especially with how many villains that could possibly ally themselves with the heroes. Good or bad, the magicians of the DC Universe have seen that there are forces that won’t hesitate to bring them harm, and the only way these heroes and villains may survive is by teaming up for future endeavors. Fans wanting to see the potential Justice League Dark for themselves can read about them in Lazarus Planet: Alpha #1, on sale now.
