DC’s Most Unexpected Dynamic Duo Is The Team-Up Fans Deserve

Warning: SPOILERS for Superman: Son of Kal-El #18They might not be Batman and Robin, but Nightwing and Lois Lane team up to create a new Dynamic Duo that DC Comics fans deserve to see more of. Lois and Dick Grayson are two of the oldest characters in DC’s history, and after recently working together, it’s clear they would make the perfect crime-fighting team.

Team-ups and heroic partnerships are an essential part of DC’s history. The most famous partnership might just be the original Dynamic Duo: Batman and Robin. Dick Grayson debuted as Robin in 1940, just a year after Batman’s first appearance. Meanwhile, Lois Lane is just as old as Superman; like Clark Kent, the character who originated the superhero genre, Lois Lane debuted in 1938’s Action Comics #1. Dick and Lois rarely cross paths—especially after Dick created the Nightwing identity and moved on from working with Batman. But a recent appearance together makes the perfect case for Nightwing and Lois Lane to be DC’s next iconic partnership.

Nightwing and Lois Lane prove to be a perfect team while working together in Superman: Son of Kal-El #18 by Tom Taylor, Ruairi Coleman, Cian Tormey, Scott Hanna, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe. In the previous issue, Lois’s son Jon Kent, who has been using the Superman mantle in his father’s absence, was attacked by a mysterious assailant whose powers mimic the effects of a red sun. Kryptonians lose their many abilities when exposed to light from a red sun. In issue #18, Lois and Nightwing tell a gathered crowd of heroes and Jon’s family that they’ve been working together to discover more about Jon’s attacker.

Nightwing and Lois Lane Make the Perfect Heroic Pair

DC’s Most Unexpected Dynamic Duo Is The Team-Up Fans Deserve

This might, at first, seem like an unexpected pair, but it’s clear from this presentation alone that Nightwing and Lois Lane work well together. In a way, they’re both overqualified detectives: Nightwing was trained by Batman, of course, and Lois is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter. They’re both experts in the field of investigating crime and corruption. Here, they’re working together to protect Superman: Lois as his mother and Dick as one of his mentors. But this scene is a teaser for what could happen if these two iconic DC characters teamed up more. Lois digging up corruption and Nightwing taking it down in the field: they could be an even more effective Dynamic Duo than Batman and Robin.

DC is currently setting up Nightwing to be the new heart of the DC Universe, and there’s no reason why Lois Lane—a character as old and heroic as Superman himself—couldn’t be the new brain. As DC enters its new era, readers should be clamoring for more team-ups between these two. Nightwing and Lois Lane could be the most effective team-up in DC Comics history.
