Crisis on Infinite Earths May Be The Most Important DC Series Ever

Crisis Created the Modern DC Universe

Crisis on Infinite Earths Flash and Superman

First published in 1985, on the occasion of DC’s 50th anniversary, the Crisis On Infinite Earths was a sweeping and ambitious story, celebrating the publisher’s history as well as looking forward to the future. Written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Perez, the team behind the then red-hot New Teen Titans, Crisis On Infinite Earths brought every DC hero and villain together, pitting them against the evil Anti-Monitor. During the course of the Crisis, DC’s existing multiverse was destroyed, save for five universes, which were then consolidated into one, creating the DC Universe modern fans know and love.

Subsequent generations of DC creators have drawn inspiration from Crisis on Infinite Earths. The event has spawned a handful of sequels, such as 1994’s Zero Hour and 2005’s Infinite Crisis. Despite the importance of Crisis to DC history, the publisher treated it gingerly at first, not issuing a trade until over a decade later. The characters of the DC Universe were also blissfully unaware of the true ramifications of the Crisis, and thus it was never talked about. Anyone following the DC Universe of today will know this is no longer the case, and the publisher now embraces the series.
