While Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez’s name may not be familiar to the public, his work has nonetheless been seen by many. The Spanish-Argentine artist worked in American comics for years before DC Comics commissioned him in 1982 to design a style guide that would be used for licensed products, such as clothing, toys and lunch boxes, to name a few. This style guide was designed largely for internal use, meaning fans have only seen glimpses of it. Garcia-Lopez has also worked on other guides for the publisher, but the original 1982 version reigns supreme.
Despite its legendary status, DC has never released a full-on look into Garcia-Lopez’s style guide. The Super Powers toy line of the 1980s, responsible for introducing an entire generation to DC Comics, used a majority of Garcia-Lopez’s designs. Furthermore, Garcia-Lopez’s art graced numerous bits of DC merchandise over time. Fans wore Superman pajamas or Batman shirts, unaware of the artist who drew the characters on them.
