A new DC Universe show focused on Stargirl will begin airing on The CW, and she may even be featured in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. Stargirl, also known in the comics as Courtney Elizabeth Whitmore, first appeared in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #0 in July 1999. The character’s name and appearance were heavily influenced by creator Geoff Johns’s later sister Courtney, who died tragically in a plane explosion in 1996.
The CW has been a longtime home of DC Extended Universe television shows, from Arrow to The Flash to Batwoman, and all of them are now in the process of coming together for the much-anticipated crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. The event, which will span all five shows currently airing on the channel, is set to start in December and run through early next year, with two of the episodes being punctuated by an aftershow hosted by Kevin Smith.
Now, according to a report by Variety, it’s been confirmed a live-action version of Stargirl will be coming to The CW as well. The show will be premiering on The DC Universe’s streaming service and then broadcasting on television via The CW the day after, with new episodes coming each week. Following Stargirl’s television broadcast episodes will be available to watch online through all of The CW’s digital platforms as well as DCU, and the show is planned to release sometime in the second quarter of 2020.
Although slated for a release later in the year, there are articles which suggest Stargirl will make her first appearance in the Crisis on Infinite Earths CW event. A news update by BuisnessInsider suggests Stargirl, portrayed on The CW by Brec Bassinger, will be initially introduced during the Crisis on Infinite Earths five-episode crossover event, and that her reveal will elaborate on how the character relates to the larger DC comics extended live-action universe.
With five shows and counting currently tied into The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths special event, it’s easy to see why DC is game to begin yet another superhero television show series. While Marvel has undeniably made larger headway in the realm of comic book movies, one need only look at the ratings for shows like Arrow and Supergirl to see that DC Comics, Snyder Cut fandom aside, is absolutely killing it in the television market. Fans of all ages are undeniably excited about the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, and eagle-eyed comic book readers are sure to be on the lookout for Stargirl’s first appearance when it begins airing next month.
