DC Proves Why Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn Need to Get Back Together

The latest issue of Poison Ivy from DC Comics has proven that her break-up with Harley Quinn should never have happened and that the two should get back together. The official split between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy has been one of the most controversial decisions in modern comics. Not only did it split one of the most notable LGBTQ+ romances in comic history, but it also ended a huge symbol for Harley Quinn’s evolution as a character. Their romance saw an end to her toxic relationship with the Joker and allowed her to explore the better parts of herself with the help of girlfriend’s support. The break-up was one of the most criticized choices in DC Comics, and Poison Ivy’s new solo series is showing exactly why.

Poison Ivy is a new solo series by G. Willow Wilson and Marcio Takara that follows the titular villainess on her biggest plan ever: wiping out humanity. The comics follow her travels as she spreads a fungus called Ophiocordyceps Lamia that she will trigger at a certain time to kill the human race all at once. She’s defined how she will do this over the course of the different issues with the newest one, Poison Ivy #4, showcasing how she uses the package delivery system to spread her Last of Us-like spores. After she kills her boss when she realizes he’s been sexually harassing his workers, she and a woman she works with named Jesslyn kiss as the former shows her gratitude for Ivy putting a stop to the inappropriate actions. The two then leave work and go back to her hotel. However, even in the heat of the moment, only one person is on her mind.

During Ivy’s intimate encounter with her coworker, she’s thinking about Harley Quinn. She thinks about the mistakes she made that drove the two apart. She mentions how much she still loves Harley. She even imagines Harley in the room with her, watching as she spends time in the hotel with Jesslyn. No matter how much she tries, she can’t stop imagining the one woman she shared such a deep connection with in countless DC Comics over the years. She even goes as far to mention that Harley is the reason why she doesn’t want to die from her terminal illness caused by the Lamia spores. She states “I love you, and somehow after all of this…I want to live,” solidifying that at the end of the day, she wants nothing more than to be with Harley again.

What’s even more fascinating is that this isn’t a one-way realization. Harley has been hinted to still have feelings for Ivy as well. When she met up with Catwoman in Catwoman #43 by Tini Howard and Bengal, DC teased a romance between the two antiheroes. However, Catwoman mentions that she can’t do this because in her heart, she knows that “both our hearts are elsewhere. And there’s a kind of bad that even we don’t want to be.” This pretty much confirms that Catwoman is aware that Quinn still misses Ivy and wants nothing more than to get back together with her. The two were made for each other, and to take away any chance of that would have made Catwoman feel terrible.

With things being clear that the break-up between Ivy and Quinn hasn’t done much for the two as they still continue to think about each other, hopefully this will mean that one day they will reunite for good. Not only would this be good for the characters, but it would also have fans from all over rejoicing at one of the best written couples, LGBTQ+ or otherwise, finally coming back, even with its flaws. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy were made for each other, and the hints toward their love still being there will hopefully lead to DC Comics finally bringing them back together.
