DC Is Revisiting a Pivotal Green Arrow Story (With the Perfect Twist)

Warning! Contains Spoilers For Green Arrow #8!

DC has just given one of the most iconic Green Arrow storylines a major twist, as Onomatopoeia, one of the most brutal villains Oliver Queen has ever faced, returns in shocking fashion. The latest Arrow-Onomatopoeia showdown is a remix of their very first encounter – except in a stunning turn, Oliver did not survive this time.

Green Arrow #8 – written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Phil Hester, color by Romulo Fajardo Jr., and lettering by Troy Peteri – opens with the gamechanging death of Oliver Queen at the hands of serial killer Onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia has been a Green Arrow antagonist for years; in his first appearance, he notably very nearly killed Connor Hawke.

Now, with Connor operating as Green Arrow, Onomatopoeia has lashed out at the Green Arrows once more, killing Oliver with five shots to the chest. This leaves Connor out for revenge, in a major twist on Onomatopoeia’s debut story.

Green Arrow #12 (2002) Green Arrow watches over his son Connor as he's on the operating table

Introduced in Kevin Smith’s early 2000s Green Arrow run, Onomatopoeia is a serial killer who targets non-powered vigilantes. In the subsequent years, he has been one of Green Arrow’s most dangerous villains. When he first appeared in Star City, he immediately went after Green Arrow, encountering Connor first. Not knowing the difference, Onomatopoeia nearly killed him, leading Oliver to seek reprisal against the villain. Now, decades later, Onomatopoeia has succeeded in killing Oliver, suggesting his upcoming conflict with Connor will be even more brutal.

The reversal of the story isn’t the only connection between Green Arrow #8 and Onomatopoeia’s earliest appearance. Phil Hester, the artist for Kevin Smith’s run, has returned for this storyline. This direct connection between the two arcs makes it even more evident the narratives are intended to “rhyme,” so to speak. Phil Hester hasn’t been the artist for this series so far, so for DC to bring him back is a clear connection that they’re trying to make. Hester’s art brought Onomatopoeia to life, and it’s only fitting that he’s the artist to help retell this iconic Green Arrow storyline.

Green Arrow #12 (2002), Oliver Prevents Onomatopoeia from killing Connor Queen

While it seems unlikely that Oliver Queen will stay dead, it’ll still be an interesting chance to see exactly how Connor reacts in the same position his father was in so many years ago. Connor and Oliver are two very different men, and while Oliver brutally beat Onomatopoeia down and nearly killed him, it’s unclear what route Connor will take in the same position. No matter what the outcome, it’s still fascinating to see DC return to one of Green Arrow’s classic stories from so long ago with a fresh new take.
