The Legion of Super-Heroes is one of the greatest teams in the DC Universe, and now the secret to their success has been revealed. In a preview for Justice League vs. Legion of Super-Heroes #1, on sale in print and digital January 11, the mysterious Gold Lantern, one of the Legion’s newest recruits, reveals that a diversity of both powers and perspectives are the keys to the Legion’s success.

Outside of the Justice League and the Justice Society, the Legion of Super-Heroes is one of DC’s oldest teams, stretching back to the late 1950’s. Consisting of super-powered teenagers from across the United Planets in the 31st century, the Legion of Super-Heroes lives up to the “Legion” part of its name, a sprawling group that at one point had to limit its membership size. The team has been through several different incarnations, many of them tied to DC’s somewhat frequent continuity changes; the most recent version of the Legion debuted in 2019, headed up by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Ryan Sook. This new Legion featured a more diverse membership, with several new and interesting additions, including a 31st-century Doctor Fate, Jon Kent and the Gold Lantern. Questions about the Gold Lantern’s identity were left unanswered during the book’s first run, but those mysteries are now coming to the surface in Justice League vs Legion of Super-Heroes #1, written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Scott Godlewski, colors by Ryan Cody and letters by Dave Sharpe.

The preview opens with the Gold Lantern talking about being not only a Lantern, but a member of the Legion. He refers to them as his “friends” and that it was his “greatest honor” to be counted among them. The Gold Lantern then offers his insight into why the Legion is one of the greatest teams in history—their diversity. The Gold Lantern mentions every planet has a member, leading to not only a wide range of powers, but perspectives and ways of thinking as well. The Gold Lantern’s narration is accompanied by the Legion investigating a mysterious monster with ties to the coming Great Darkness.

The Gold Lantern is absolutely right: diversity is the key to the Legion of Super-Heroes’ success. The Legion brings together the best and brightest from across the United Planets, fostering a sense of community among disparate worlds and cultures and bolstering morale. The unique and different perspectives each Legion member brings to the table ensures a wide variety of solutions to any problems the team may face. The scenes of the Legion in action in the preview prove this, as the team works together to determine the nature of the creature in front of them.

The Legion of Super-Heroes will soon face their greatest challenge, as the Great Darkness begins to assert itself across the multiverse, and yet in a preview for Justice League vs. Legion of Super-Heroes #1, readers learn the team’s diversity is why they will prevail.
