After making enemies of humans, demons, and angels, John Constantine has dozens of people who’d love nothing more than to see him dead. John’s life is almost always in danger, and one of the reasons he fights so hard to survive is because, as Dream of the Endless points out, if John does die, there’s absolutely no afterlife waiting for him.
As of John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #1 by Simon Spurrier and Aaron Campbell, John’s heart has stopped beating, and he doesn’t know why. Having to flee England, John has come to America to try and solve the mystery of why his heart has stopped and his body has begun decaying. Naturally, dying isn’t something anyone wants, but Dream of the Endless reveals that if John dies, his fate will be much worse.
It turns out that John has been banned from both Heaven and Hell, and if he dies, his soul will simply be obliterated. There won’t be an afterlife waiting for John Constantine on the other side.

Dream Confirms that When Constantine Dies, He’ll Be Gone Forever
John Constantine has always been heavily involved with the supernatural. He’s made deals with demons and angels alike, and he’s done his best to avoid paying his side of the bargain if he can help it. John has seemingly been banned from Hell, and Heaven has barred him from joining due to his actions. When John Constantine dies there simply won’t be a place for his soul to go, and this is an idea that DC has played with before several times in a number of different continuities.
During the events of DCeased, John willingly obliterated his soul to bring down the demon Trigon. This was a major heroic sacrifice on John’s part, but it destroyed his soul and prevented him from joining any kind of afterlife. This seems to always be the fate awaiting John, no matter the universe. He has spent decades trying to avoid falling into Hell — and joining Heaven was never going to be an option for him. Now that his lifespan is truly running out, John is teetering on the brink of actual oblivion.
Constantine’s Body Is Rotting from the Inside Out
If John Constantine wants to avoid being found dead in America, he’s going to need to gather new allies and solve the mystery of why his body is rotting from the inside out. While avoiding death has always been a powerful motivator for John, he now has to fight something far scarier than just death. John has dealt with tons of ghosts over the years — and has even been one in a few stories — but if John Constantine dies now, there won’t be anything left of him to be a ghost, especially if every version of the afterlife refuses him.
