DC Comics’ New, Non-Binary Flash Makes Their Comics Debut

Warning! Spoilers for DC’s Very Merry Multiverse #1 below

DC’s newest Flash has made their official comics debut. Earlier last month, DC teased the arrival of Jess Chambers, a new speedster from Earth-11 who is set to become the Flash in the upcoming Future State: Justice League. In their first adventure, Chambers helped save the Justice League and their aunt Jesse Quick, from a psychic threat.

Chambers will take the role of the future Flash in the upcoming Future State event that will take a deep dive into the future DC Comics Universe. The two-month, line-wide event will change the status quo at DC, introducing a number of new heroes and villains who take the roles of legacy heroes, including Chambers’ Flash, Yara Flor’s Wonder Woman, and a Batman who’s true identity has yet to be revealed. Before suiting up alongside the Justice League, Chambers made their first appearance in this week’s holiday special.

In the short story “To Stop The Star-Conqueress,” in this week’s DC’s Very Merry Multiverse #1 by Ivan Cohen, Eleonora Carlini, Ulises Arreola, and Becca Carney, readers are taken to Earth-11, where the Justice Guild (Justice League) is led by gender-flipped heroes such as Batwoman, Aquawoman, and Jesse Quick’s Flash. The young heroes, consisting of Supergirl (Laurel Kent), Robin (Talia Kane), Aquagirl (Jacqui Hyde), Donald Troy, and Kid Quick, are forced into action when the Guild is mind-controlled by Starrla, the Star Conquerer. In the battle, Quick is seen repeating a formula that helps them tap into the Speed Force.

Ultimately, Kid Quick’s speed helps the teen heroes team-up and break the Justice Guild from their psychic hold. In just a few short pages, they show off their ability to think and act on the fly, to partner with other heroes when needed, and their extreme speed. Kid Quick, who is genderfluid (and uses they/them pronouns) has all the makings of a Justice League-worthy Flash and this short story serves as a great introduction to the speedster.

It hasn’t been said how Chambers will come to mainstream continuity, but it seems likely that they will be folded into DC’s main Earth after the events of the multiverse-shaking Dark Nights: Death Metal. Given Kid Quick’s connection to the Speed Force, multiversal travel is also not out of the question. No matter how they get there, in their debut issue, Jess Chambers proves to be a worthy addition to the extended Flash-Family. They will make their Justice League debut as the Flash in the upcoming Future State: Justice League.
