DC Actor’s Latest Comments Make The Flash’s Biggest Missed Cameo Opportunity Even Worse

Grant Gustin, who starred as Barry Allen in the Arrowverse’s The Flash, never had the opportunity to make a cameo appearance in the DC Extended Universe movie The Flash, making the already-disappointing missed opportunity far worse. Grant Gustin played The Flash for nine seasons in his solo TV series and made numerous appearances throughout the Arrowverse shared universe, including in massive crossover events that delved into the DC multiverse. Ezra Miller plays the version of Barry Allen found in the DCEU timeline, whose solo film also explores the multiverse and includes alternate iterations of cinematic DC characters. With this in mind, it is unfortunate that Gustin never had the chance to appear in Miller’s film.

2023’s The Flash is a loose adaptation of the 2011 DC comic storyline Flashpoint, with Barry Allen traveling back in time and preventing his mother’s murder, but inadvertently creating a new – and doomed – timeline in the process. The film acknowledges and includes alternate versions of iconic live-action DC heroes, with Michael Keaton’s Batman playing a major role and Christopher Reeve’s Superman having a cameo in the film’s finale, which depicts a number of alternate realities, yet Grant Gustin’s version of The Flash is absent. More frustratingly, Grant Gustin revealed in an interview that – to his knowledge – he was never contacted for a potential cameo in 2023’s The Flash.

The Flash Movie Not Having Grant Gustin Cameo Is Its Biggest Missed Opportunity

The Flash (particularly the Barry Allen iteration) has had a selection of appearances in the realm of live-action, albeit with few starring roles and most being on television. Grant Gustin’s iteration of The Flash is by far the most popular and well-known live-action version of the hero. Moreover, Ezra Miller’s DCEU iteration made a brief but memorable cameo in the Arrowverse, appearing in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, where he not only met and befriended Gustin’s version but also gained his superhero moniker. With the two versions of Barry Allen having established a rapport on TV, it seems natural that they would reunite on the big screen in 2023’s The Flash.

The Flash includes one alternate iteration of Barry Allen, with Ezra Miller playing his own Flashpoint-universe doppelgänger who, in the future, becomes the murderous Dark Flash. When confronting the Dark Flash in the film’s climax, the mainstream DCEU Barry Allen observes other realities colliding, where most of the film’s alternate universe cameos occur. Perplexingly, a previously-unseen version of the Golden Age Flash appears in this segment of the movie, yet Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen is nowhere to be found. While having Gustin and Miller exchange dialogue again would have been ideal, The Flash should have given Gustin a similar cameo at the very least.

The 1 Positive Aspect Of Grant Gustin Not Appearing In The Flash Movie

Ezra Miller's Flash and Grant Gustin Flash

Unfortunately, 2023’s The Flash was a commercial failure whose critical reception was lukewarm and whose production was mired in controversy, due to Ezra Miller’s multitude of legal issues off-camera. For better or worse, this arguably gives the frustrating absence of Grant Gustin’s version of The Flash a silver lining. By not appearing in The Flash, Grant Gustin’s version of Barry Allen is at least spared a cameo in one of the DCEU’s least successful movies.
