Dave Grohl gets possessed in the newest trailer from the upcoming Foo Fighters horror film, Studio 666. The film marks a first for the highly popular band, after decades of playing sold-out stadiums around the world and endearing themselves to the public through a variety of unique moments. Much of this love is due to Grohl, who created the band in 1994 after the tragic death of Kurt Cobain put an end to his involvement in Nirvana.
In the brief time during which Nirvana was intact, the band played a major role in spearheading the grunge scene and catapulted drummer Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic, and guitarist/singer Cobain into superstardom, making Nirvana the biggest band in the world at the time. But the shaky foundation that Nirvana was built on wasn’t to last, and with Cobain’s death came a period of uncertainty for Grohl, who wasn’t sure he could return to music again. Fortunately for himself and his fans, Grohl’s remarkable talents gave rise to the Foo Fighters and throughout the years in which the band has grown, the punk rocker turned full-blown rock star has used his positive mindset and anything-can-happen attitude to charm everyone from journalists to rock n’ roll royalty to packed stadiums of fans.
Now it seems that Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters are ready to take a step in a new direction, releasing their first feature-length film as a band, Studio 666. The horror-comedy was briefly revealed last November, but a new full-length trailer courtesy of BD Horror Trailers and Clips has just dropped in preparation for the film’s February 25 release. Eager to find a special place to record their tenth album, the band selects a home that’s special in all the wrong ways, with Grohl experiencing some seriously concerning yet utterly hilarious moments of demonic possession. There aren’t too many bands working today who can pull off having their own feature film. And while some would argue that Studio 666 isn’t going to be an Oscar contender, that’s hardly the point. The Foo Fighters have always retained a certain sense of humor in their music videos and Grohl is no stranger to making some pretty hilarious cameos in a handful of films, most notably Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny when he played Satan. Seeing him as a demonic entity in Studio 666 will be a delight for fans of the band and horror films alike, however, with the entire film already feeling like some sort of bizarre crossover between a Scooby-Doo episode and the Evil Dead franchise.
In reality, the tenth Foo Fighters album was released last year and didn’t involve the band recording in a demonic portal that ultimately possessed Grohl. Still, ten albums from a band whose first album began with Grohl recording bass, drums, guitar, and vocals on his own and producing 100 cassettes is a remarkable achievement. Never content to rest on his laurels, Grohl has taken his band into some new territory with Studio 666 and so far that territory looks like a whole lot of fun.
