Dave Bautista Disappointed By How Marvel Handled Drax & Thanos Plot

Dave Bautista is still clueless why Marvel Studios decided to drop Drax the Destroyer’s revenge storyline against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, the character is among the original roster of rag-tag cosmic heroes who quickly became fan-favorites. Like Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax was somehow tied to the Mad Titan after realizing that the villain was ultimately to blame for the death of his family during his planet-to-planet crusade to balance the universe.

This was the primary arc for the hero and the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie set it up to continue moving forward. After that, however, it was never properly revisited again even as the Infinity Saga ended and Thanos getting defeated. There was a moment in Avengers: Infinity War where he had the chance to confront the Mad Titan, but it’s far too brief. In fact, he could even get close as the Reality Stone was immediately used against him. By the time they reunited in Titan, it was more of a collective effort to take down the villain, which meant that his personal vendetta had to be set aside. Five years after the decimation, he had another chance to fight Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, but unlike Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) or Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), he still didn’t have a chance to go up against the purple alien.

Now, Thanos is dead and Drax may be nearing his end in the MCU, there’s barely any chance to provide a satisfying pay-off to hero’s personal arc. For Bautista, he’s still unsure why this narrative was seemingly ignored. On his personal Twitter account, he says that every reason he has thought of why Marvel Studios would ignore this plotline doesn’t seem to make sense. Read what he wrote below:

Bautista’s sentiments are valid; Marvel Studios did seem to just ignore the set-up to his personal arc as the Infinity Saga went on. Considering that it’s the character’s central storyline, without it, he was easily cast aside, only utilized for comedic purposes as seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Infinity War. The MCU could’ve at least given him the chance to confront the Mad Titan for what was done to his family. On the flip side, however, there’s an argument that there wasn’t enough time to properly explore Drax’s storyline in the last two Avengers movies. Both Infinity War and Endgame were pressed with time, and with Thanos being debuted late in Phase 3, there were other storylines that had to be prioritized than Drax’s. For what it’s worth, even Nebula (Karen Gillan) didn’t have her time against the adopted father who abused her for years.

Coming into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bautista is adamant that he’s ready to retire Drax and leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the upcoming Gunn film. That means that the threequel will have to wrap up his story to explain his absence moving forward. The question now is how that will be done considering that Thanos has long been gone by the time the film comes out.
