Darth Vader & Thrawn’s Shared Backstory Makes Galaxy’s Edge Way Cooler

Darth Vader & Thrawn’s Shared Backstory Makes Galaxy’s Edge Way Cooler

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances #1

Grand Admiral Thrawn’s history with Darth Vader in the Star Wars canon makes Galaxy’s Edge even cooler. Also known as Black Spire Outpost, Galaxy’s Edge is Disneyland’s immersive Star Wars-themed section of the park, resembling an outpost on the Outer Rim world of Batuu. To that end, Thrawn and Vader have canonically been to Black Spire (twice).

In the new graphic novel adaptation of Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances by Timothy Zahn, Jody Houser, Pat Olliffe, and Andrea Di Vito, the first issue features Thrawn and Vader entering Black Spire Outpost, though it’s not the first time either of them have visited. Tasked with working together by the Emperor himself, Thrawn and Vader are investigating a mysterious disturbance that could endanger the security of the Empire, not unlike their very first meeting years prior when Vader was still Anakin Skywalker.

Upon entering Oga’s Cantina, Vader and Thrawn get to work learning what they can about Black Spire, including the Darshi who’ve recently taken over the outpost. This is pretty cool seeing as how Oga’s is a real-life cantina Disneyland guests can visit at Galaxy’s Edge to order drinks. To that end, there’s even evidence at the park of Thrawn and Vader’s shared adventure.

Seen having a complete bar brawl and shootout once the Darshi grows suspicious of Thrawn and Vader’s presence. As such, the evidence of their battle can be seen in the actual Oga’s Cantina, complete with blaster scoring and impacts on the stone walls. It’s a very small yet very cool detail which absolutely helps the Star Wars-themed land feel real, as if guests had indeed entered the galaxy far, far away.

As the graphic adaptation of Thrawn Alliances continues with new issues, it will be very interesting to see what else from Galaxy’s Edge might be featured on the page. After all, the original novel was one of the very first pieces of Star Wars media to introduce Batuu and Black Spire into the official canon before the section of Disneyland was even open. To that end, perhaps there will be other Easter eggs such as Savi’s or Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

While the issue ends with Thrawn and Vader’s brawl in Oga’s, their biggest challenge is yet to come. Hailing from the Unknown Regions, the Darshi work for the Grysk Hegemony, the longtime rivals of Thrawn’s people the Chiss. To that end, it will soon be up to Thrawn and Darth Vader to protect the Empire and its interests from the Grysks as Thrawn Alliances continues.
