Darkseid Gave 1 Underrated Batman Villain A Massive Power Upgrade

Few DC villains can compare to the power of Darkseid – though one surprising Batman enemy once managed to steal some of Darkseid’s power. In one somewhat obscure DC adventure, Mr. Freeze was inadvertently exposed to Omega Energy, the same source that the cosmic villain draws his strength from, granting him a fragment of the New God’s power.

Super Power #2 –by Paul Kupperberg and Carmine Infantino – featured Mr. Freeze’s unexpected power-up. In the story, Mr. Freeze was blasted with Omega Energy, a form of Darkseid’s iconic Omega Effect. This somehow greatly increased Mr. Freeze’s powers over cold.

Despite Mr. Freeze’s cold blasts coming from his guns, Batman comments that their effectiveness seems greatly increased, with even the air near the blast leaving him numb. This change in power was so great that it even allowed Mr. Freeze to get the advantage over Batman, nearly killing him, before his ally Firestom intervented.

Mr. Freeze’s Powers Over Cold Were Greatly Enhanced By Darkseid’s Omega Energy

Mr. Freeze has always been a dangerous villain for Batman, with his brilliant mind allowing him to create several different types of ice weaponry. His iconic freeze gun allows him to freeze people solid, killing them instantly. This had already made him very dangerous, but after he was hit with the Omega Energy in Super Power #2, his freeze guns and physical strength were significantly boosted. He managed to easily beat Batman in a hand-to-hand fight, and Batman remarks that his freeze gun blasts are so cold that even avoiding direct hits didn’t help.

Despite this seeming like it’d be a big deal, Mr. Freeze’s new-found strength wasn’t brought up again after that. Since this took place on Earth-1956, it was already out of continuity with the mainstream DC Universe, but even then, Mr. Freeze simply got to go back to Earth with these new-found powers and no one really seemed to mind. There have been a few attempts in comics to give Mr. Freeze actual powers, most notable when Mr. Freeze’s origin was changed in the New 52. This was also undone, though, so it seems that Mr. Freeze simply isn’t destined for power.

The idea of a street-level villain gaining the powers of a cosmic being is always a great one, and Super Power #2 did it fairly engagingly. Mr. Freeze gaining the powers of Darkseid could lead to some fun moments, were this semi-obscure plot point be revisited by DC in the future. Mr. Freeze of Earth-1956 could be brought into the regular DC canon, or the storyline could be remixed and done in a new, exciting way. Mr. Freeze is a character that deserves to be more than a street-level villain, and fusing him with Darkseid’s power remains a perfect upgrade for the villain.
