Elden Ring was announced at E3 2019 and fans of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series were instantly hooked. The brief glimpses of huge enemies and sparkling armors drew obvious similarities between the titles, after all. The news that Hidetaka Miyazaki would be working alongside George R.R. Martin on this project was definitely the icing on the cake, and fans are undoubtably interested in seeing what the fantastical duo might come up with.

Almost anyone who follows gaming news is curious as to what Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin are cooking up for Elden Ring. Despite this curiosity, though, not much is known about the game. Beyond what was shown in the E3 announcement trailer for Elden Ring, anything else is mostly speculation. Since there’s a lack of information on what’s new in Elden Ring, it might be safer to look back and wonder what, or whom, might be returning from other FromSoftware titles.

The idea of characters from Dark Souls appearing in Elden Ring might not be as strange as some would think. After all, Patches is a great example of a character that has slipped out of the Dark Souls series. He technically didn’t even start there, as he was originally a character in Demon’s Souls. The only thing from Dark Souls that’s managed to be in even more games than him would be the Moonlight Greatsword, which has essentially become a FromSoftware character in its own right. Based on past history of both the Moonlight Greatsword and Patches jumping games, they should definitely show up somewhere in Elden Ring.

Dark Souls NPCs Who Could Return For Elden Ring

Beyond what’s most likely to show up though, there are a few characters from Dark Souls that would simply be nice to see in a new FromSoftware game, with the first being everyone’s favorite summon for jolly co-operation, Solaire of Astora. Solaire provides an optimism that’s rare in the Dark Souls series, and if Elden Ring shares its atmosphere then Solaire would surely be a welcome break in the gloom.

Speaking of jolly companions, it would be a tragedy to ignore the forgetful knights of Catarina. Different members of the organization have shown up throughout the Dark Souls games, but their onion shaped helms, forgetful natures, and chivalrous actions make them feel one in the same. A member of these lovable onion knights would be an amazing NPC to bring into Elden Ring.

Finally, a character that has shown up in a few Dark Souls games and could have an interesting role in Elden Ring would be Andre the Blacksmith. The game’s announcement trailer talked about how an item called “the Elden Ring” had shattered, so who better to forge it again than this iconic blacksmith from the Dark Souls series?

In all likelihood, Andre and any other characters from Dark Souls would have a small role to play if they make it into Elden Ring. Still, this doesn’t mean they can’t, as the game’s scope appears to be much larger than other FromSoftware titles. It’s unsure when fans will find out what references have managed to sneak in though, as the game hasn’t even received a release date yet. Regardless, Elden Ring is sure to be worth whatever the wait ends up being, and it’ll be exciting to see what this collaboration with George R.R. Martin produces.
