Marvel’s Devil’s Reign event is coming soon, and a brand new preview for the series shows Matt Murdock’s Daredevil back in action with the Avengers. Marvel Comics revealed the first look at Devil’s Reign, as the original Daredevil gets back into action against the Kingpin with his fellow Daredevil and the Avengers by his side. For Murdock, it’s a welcome return as Daredevil.
Marvel’s Devil’s Reign event is a culmination of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s critically acclaimed run on Daredevil. In the run, Murdock essentially gives up the role of Daredevil after confessing to accidentally killing a mobster. As he goes to jail (but keeps his cowl on to protect his secret identity), Elektra took up the moniker of Daredevil and fought in his place. Elektra promised Matt to do things his way and has proven to be an effective hero while not killing like she used to. Both heroes are set to suit up against the Kingpin alongside the Avengers as Kingpin makes his biggest play for the Marvel Universe yet.
Earlier solicits for Devil’s Reign by Zdarsky and Checchetto have teased Kingpin assembling his own roster of villains to take down Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While the Thunderbolts will debut in the event’s second issue, Daredevil will have a very tense encounter with the Kingpin before that happens. In the preview, the Mayor of New York promises that he will destroy all of the masked hero’s friends while exposing their greatest secrets while watching them burn.
Kingpin asks Daredevil his ultimate question: who’s hiding behind the mask? When Daredevil doesn’t respond, Kingpin gets quite angry, screaming at him to answer him. Instead, the hero tells him it’s called a secret identity for a good reason and leaves the villain to deal to stew in his anger.
The interaction reveals that Matt Murdock isn’t scared of the Kingpin – at least not anymore. With Wilson Fisk threatening to expose the greatest secrets of all of his closest allies and burn down Hell’s Kitchen and beyond, Daredevil doesn’t flinch. Even when Kingpin tries to get him to reveal his secret identity, Daredevil can’t help but smirk. While it’s great to see Murdock’s Daredevil back in action, it’s not exactly in his best interest to continue to piss off Kingpin. Fisk has been assembling gaining more resources and power than ever before to prepare for his upcoming attack on the Marvel Universe. It seems he’s about to unleash it in his takeover attempt. Readers can see Daredevil back in action alongside the Avengers when Devil’s Reign #1 comes to comic book stores in December.
