Daredevil: Born Again Casts Many Saints Of Newark’s Michael Gandolfini

Daredevil: Born Again has cast Many Saints Of Newark star Michael Gandolfini for the new Disney+ series from Marvel Studios. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are becoming regular players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again following the end of Netflix’s Daredevil TV show. While both of them will appear in the Echo spinoff series in 2023, they will also be starring in Daredevil: Born Again, which is in development. While it won’t be an official season 4 to their first show, Daredevil: Born Again will be a semi-sequel to the Netflix drama.

Despite the fact that Daredevil: Born Again won’t be premiering until 2024, the MCU series has tapped its first new cast member. Deadline reports that Gandolfini, best known for his roles in Many Saints Of Newark and The Deuce, has been tapped for a major role in Daredevil: Born Again season 1. It’s unclear if he’s a series regular or a recurring guest star, but the trade is hearing that he might play “an ambitious guy from Staten Island” who is being referred to as “Liam.” Marvel Studios, Disney+, and Gandolfini’s representatives have yet to comment on the casting.

How Michael Gandolfini Might Fit Into Daredevil: Born Again

Since Daredevil: Born Again was properly confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con, barely any details have emerged about the series other than that Cox’s Matt and D’Onofrio’s Kingpin will be two of the principal characters. If Gandolfini is truly playing someone named “Liam,” it’s very likely that it’s only a cover name for the actual character. A lot of superhero properties, particularly from Marvel Studios, tend to use placeholders during auditions to avoid spoilers from leaking, and then reveal their real identities once the film or show is released.

Assuming that “Liam” is only a temporary name, it’s hard to guess who Gandolfini might be playing and how he fits overall into Daredevil: Born Again. Chances are that he is playing someone crucial from the Daredevil comics or at least someone from the Marvel Universe. Most of the MCU shows tend to cast both big and small characters who already exist in the books, even those with very few comic appearances. With a loose character description that he is an “ambitious guy,” he could either be an ally or rival to Daredevil.

What To Expect From Daredevil: Born Again

While it will be some time before Marvel Studios and Disney+ unveil more specific details about the series, something to remember about Daredevil: Born Again is that it won’t reboot the MCU hero. Even though the series won’t necessarily be continuing anything that Daredevil seasons 1 through 3 set up, they are also not retconning it and treating this as if Cox is playing an entirely new iteration of the character. Daredevil: Born Again is better seen as a natural progression for a character who has been in the MCU since 2015. With Daredevil: Born Again likely eying production in 2023, it will hopefully not be too long until more news emerges about the MCU drama.
