Daniel Radcliffe Details New Movie Script He Wrote & Wants to Direct

Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he has finished writing the script for a film, and he wants to direct it within the next few years. Radcliffe first rose to international attention as the star of the Harry Potter film series. From the age of 11, the British actor played the titular wizard for a decade over the course of eight films, alongside leading co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

Since his time on Harry Potter, Radcliffe has managed to dismiss concerns about typecasting and has taken on a wide variety of roles. These have included the lead roles in the horror The Woman In Black, the surreal drama Swiss Army Man, and action-comedy Guns Akimbo, to name a few. Radcliffe’s most recent release is The Lost City, in which he plays the villainous billionaire Abigail Fairfax alongside Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. The actor’s next film is a Weird Al Yankovic biopic, however unconfirmed rumors have also speculated that he could have a role in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Now, speaking on Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review, Radcliffe has shared his ambition to write and direct a film, revealing that he has already finished writing a script. The actor described his script as “smaller scale,” unlike some of the big-budget projects he’s worked on like Harry Potter and The Lost City. He also shared his belief that his time on film sets, working under directors, means that he could “lead a set.” The actor also hinted at the timeline for his project, saying he hopes he’d be able to direct it within “the next couple of years.” Check out Radcliffe’s full comments below:

“I’ve written something, and I hope to direct it in the next couple of years, would be ideal. I’ve definitely spent so much time on sets now, with great directors, that I feel I could lead a set and do that… My film’s a much smaller scale, for the first one, than [The Lost City].”

It isn’t uncommon for actors to take the step behind the camera to writing and directing, with successful recent examples being found in Greta Gerwig, Bradley Cooper, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Jon Favreau. While Radcliffe doesn’t give any hints about the genre of his script, audiences will undoubtedly wonder about the ways in which it may have been influenced by his long career as an actor in fantasy, action, comedy, and drama films. If Radcliffe is able to direct the film, influence might also come from the variety of talented and iconic directors he’s worked under, who include Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, and Judd Apatow.

While it’s clear that the potential film is still in the earliest stages, if Radcliffe is set to direct the project within the next couple of years, it might not be too long before the first details emerge about his script. However, plenty of scripts never make it to the big-screen, and the actor could find that he has to wait longer than he hopes before he gets the chance to make his directorial debut. If any work on the film does continue, its progress will be monitored intently due to interest in Daniel Radcliffe himself, and his consistently interesting career.
