Daniel Day-Lewis Acting Return Rumors Receive Response From Producer

A Hollywood producer is speaking out about the rumors regarding Daniel Day-Lewis‘ potential return to Hollywood. Day-Lewis’ career began in the 1970s and ended with 2017’s Phantom Thread. Since then, Day-Lewis has remained in retirement. During his career, Day-Lewis starred in numerous critically acclaimed movies, including There Will Be Blood, Lincoln, and The Last of the Mohicans. While he has stayed soundly in retirement, recent rumors about a secret reunion with Steven Spielberg have been circling through Hollywood.

Because Spielberg has directed so many brilliant movies, there have been rumors that he may be enough to draw Day-Lewis out of retirement, especially after their Lincoln collaboration. A recent meeting with Day-Lewis, Spielberg, and producer Jim Sheridan has raised suspicions about Day-Lewis returning to the industry. In an interview with Deadline, however, Sheridan revealed that Day-Lewis was not meeting about an acting role. Instead, they were negotiating a producing spot for him on an upcoming project about Joe Kennedy. Check out his quote below:

“We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor. It was on the life of Joe Kennedy, the patriarch of the Kennedy family… we haven’t advanced it, we were just talking.”

Will Daniel Day-Lewis’ Return To Acting?

While Daniel Day-Lewis may not be returning to acting, he still has a fantastic career to look back on. Because he was largely known for his method acting style, Day-Lewis retired because of the intensity involved with being drawn into his roles. It allowed him to develop critically renowned movies, including The Crucible, The Age of Innocence, and There Will Be Blood, but it took a toll on him as a person.

A potential return is still not entirely out of the possibility for Day-Lewis. He previously retired in 1997 and remained away from the industry until his much-praised return in 2002’s Gangs of New York. He could potentially return once again, as he is only 66 years old. Many other actors, including the 81-year-old Harrison Ford and the 88-year-old Julie Andrews, have been able to remain in the industry in their later years.

Every Movie Role Daniel Day-Lewis Turned Down

Method actor extraordinaire Daniel Day-Lewis is notoriously picky with the roles he takes on, meaning he has said no to a lot of great parts.

It has been nearly 10 years since Day-Lewis retired from acting, in the longest gap since he starred as an uncredited actor in Sunday Bloody Sunday in 1971 and returned to acting for 1979’s play The Recruiting Officer. If he does not return to the screen again, he could still be reappearing in Hollywood as a producer to reunite with Spielberg. With the Kennedy project still in development, Daniel Day-Lewis is at least in discussion with industry leaders once again.
