Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are set to star together in the upcoming movie Daddy’s Home, focusing on how hard it can be to be a step-parent. The duo previously teamed up in 2010 for the action/comedy The Other Guys, and it comes as little surprise that Daddy’s Home is also a comedy – one that features Ferrell in the role of step-dad.
Ferrell plays the part of Brad, now happily married to his new wife, Sarah (Linda Cardellini, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and hoping to be the best possible step-dad he can be to her two children. His life takes a turn for the worse when their father, Dusty (Wahlberg) comes to visit and the two go to great lengths to prove themselves in the dad stakes. Daddy’s Home is directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, who have previously written several comedies together, including We’re the Millers and Hot Tub Time Machine. While Anders has previous directing credits to his name (including Horrible Bosses 2), this will mark Morris’ first outing as co-director. The script comes from Brian Burns (Entourage).

Daddy’s Home seems to follow the tried and tested format of rivals vying to outdo each other – in stunts that become more and more silly, though the film. In this instance, it involves Will Ferrell’s classic dad-type character boldly claiming to be able to ride a motorcycle (he really can’t) and staging Christmas in April; giving him an opportunity to present his step-kids with Lakers tickets. We also see an attempt at skateboarding off the roof of his house and yep, you’ve guessed it, everything goes wrong. This stunt ends in electrocution.
So okay, it’s goofy, we all know how it will turn out in the end – and Will Ferrell is, well, the same Will Ferrell as always. That said, if pure escapism and easy humor are your bag, Daddy’s Home looks to deliver. With its Christmas Day release, it’ll be a worthy choice to take in over the holidays if you have older kids – or even if you don’t. The sight of a drunken Brad mistakenly hurling a basketball into the face of a cheerleader will no doubt have many laughing out loud, and happily headed out for a viewing in theaters.
Daddy’s Home arrives in U.S. theaters on December 25th, 2015.
