Godzilla Minus One has broken a longstanding record with its Oscar nomination. The movie is the 33rd Japanese-language Godzilla movie made by Toho since the 1954 original. Director, writer, and visual effects lead Takashi Yamazaki helmed the project, which follows a former kamikaze pilot attempting to rebuild his life in a war-torn Tokyo following the end of World War II. However, his attempts are disrupted by the arrival of the giant radioactive monster Godzilla.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, amid the record-breaking Godzilla Minus One American release, the movie has been nominated for an Academy Award. The nominations, which were announced on the morning of January 23 by Jack Quaid and Zazie Beetz, included a Best Visual Effects nod for the new Godzilla movie. This makes it the first movie in the 70-year, 38-movie history of the franchise to be nominated for an Oscar.

Godzilla Minus One
